Hey folks! I’ve been wondering what constitutes a Hypoallergenic breed of dog. So, without further adieu, here is a Wiki Explanation.
There are no lists of dogs proven to be less allergenic, but single-coated dogs such as poodles and terriers might be considered. ”Dogs with double coats, such as German Shepherds, should be out of the question”.
Small hairless dogs may be less likely to cause allergic reactions “because it’s so easy to bathe them and the dander falls off them.” How hypoallergenic a particular dog is for a particular person may vary with the individual dog and the individual person.
Below is an interesting list of a few allegedly hypoallergenic breeds.
All dogs shed, and all dogs produce dander and saliva in some degree. Although there is no truly hypoallergenic dog, bathing the dog every day could make the dog “less allergenic or, as they might say on Monty Python, not tremendously allergenic.” Even if a dog sheds very little or has little dander, inhaling dog hair or dander, or being licked by a dog, can trigger a reaction in a sensitive person.
Bedington Terrier
Bichon Frise
Border Terrier
German Shorthaired Pointer
Goldendoodle
Portuguese Water Dog
Yorkshire Terrier
Xoloitzcuintle
My personal choice is the “Puli”. So cute with its Rastafarian good looks. Of course, let us not forget that President Elect Obama says, “No Small Dogs” in His White House. “A Big dog. A real dog”. Will he cave to his daughter’s choice? All indications are that soft fluffy fur is foremost on their minds and not size. hmmm……the first Goldendoodle in the White House for the very first African American 1st family. Could be - It very well could be.

Obama already said no girly dogs, so that eliminates the Puli, now the German short hair, that’s another story!
December 3, 2008 at 1:18 am
LOL Its my person preference, not Obama’s. I will put my bet on the sandard Golden Doodle. ;0)
December 3, 2008 at 1:21 am
German short hairs are great dogs, not the brightest breed, but very loyal and playeful.

Chambliss killed Martin down here in GA. It wasn’t even close. I think the margin was 14 points. Hope all are well.

What about a Weimaraner? Then they could get William Wegman to be the official WH photographer

Hip,
Glad to hear the official mascot of backchannel is still hanging in there. That’s one tough pooch.

Weimaraner is a beautiful dog!
Time for Coffee and Good Morning!

getting a less-allergenic dog AND a shelter dog is not impossible. You’d be surprised at the purebred pets you can find in a shelter, especially as some folks have had to give up a loved pet due to circumstance (moving to a no-pet apartment, or going into the military and no one to care for the pet, people who realize they just don’t have the time to walk, play with and care for a dog, pets who might have been hard to housetrain but can get it…)
The girls may be set on a puppy, but you can find some wonderful young pets who are half-grown (and a little more obvious as to what they will be as adults).
I hope they end up with a rescue dog of some sort.
That American Hairless Terrier looks good to me. Has a bipartisan mien, too, multicolored, terriers are “relentless” — a term often ascribed to VP-elect.
The whippet: a sight dog. Excellent the White House is fenced in, otherwise very easy to lose the pooch. Looks more like a Brooke Astor-type dog (although she favored dachshunds).
I think Gov. Sarah and JTP would do some sneering at a whippet. Frenchified dog, you know — didn’t Emma Bovary’s whippet sprint away over the fields, en route to her (unhappy and stultifying) marriage?
(PS: I like whippets, or virtually any dog. Just saying, though…)

Maybe the dog will choose them!

Steve: plz give KDN a hug and treat from her blogfriends. Good to hear she’s hanging in with you, and hope she’s got good quality of life.

I like that Welsh Terrier name him Osama bin Obama. Just a joke folks don’t throw things.
December 3, 2008 at 9:06 am
I like Stephanie Miller’s idea: The Obama’s should get a couple of Rottweilers.
Could come in handy during press conferences or cabinet meetings
December 3, 2008 at 9:08 am
Doots, how about “Osama Not Obama”. Kind of catchy.
December 3, 2008 at 9:08 am
re Chambliss retaining seat:
I’m not sure Obama has to worry that much about a filibuster. If his administration is putting up good and sensible legislation with a broad base of support — and you know he and all his surrogates will make an eloquent case for his programs — he can count on support from GOP moderates and GOP from moderate-leaning states (purple ones). Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins are levelheaded. Norm Coleman’s travails and Gordon Smith’s loss in Oregon have not gone unnoticed. Say what you will about Lieberman, he votes with Democrats on most domestic legislation.
I am not so sure the GOP will march to party rank and file — their numbers are reduced and still endangered (witness Florida’s Martinez concluding his re-election would be a steep uphill). GOP ideas — as practiced by the GOP — are out of favor with the majority of Americans.
GOP ideas — the good ones — that can be co-opted and made more practical and effective? You know there are some possibilities out there.
58 or 59 with a popular president who is not as beholden to party elders? Could be more than enough for some desperately needed changes.
December 3, 2008 at 9:24 am
Now I’m feeling better. No Foggy head Syndrome.
Hey dnd and Doots, I’m really getting into the Alternative energy now. Lots of interesting ideas out there. Thanks for the highlights.

Jeb Bush considering Senate run.
He could be a strong candidate. He was a popular governor, albeit he overreached with the Schiavo case. Bit of a tragedy for that family and all of us that the scion was elevated to the Presidency. GWBush is still not fit for the job.

December 3, 2008 at 9:53 am
good dog, thanks for asking, finished the antibiotics yesterday, thank god, they had me held hostage in the bathroom for 10 days! I need to have a root canal done now. I’ll probably do it next week, the fun just keeps on coming!
December 3, 2008 at 9:55 am
Rottweilers are actually great kid and family dogs.
I mean, there’s got to be something to the “Good Dog, Carl” series!
http://www.gooddogcarl.com/books.htm
Outreach to the Germans and other Europeans who are nervous about being asked to step up their involvement in Afghanistan (and, in time perhaps, Pakistan).
December 3, 2008 at 10:01 am
A root canal still! Let this be in your past soon! (And thanks to modern drugs; I’ve had one root canal and it was not as bad as advertised. The run-up was far worse.)
Chilly sunny day here. Fairfax County had patches of ice on roads this morning. Last night was fairly mild.
Met some friends for drinks and chicken wings on Capitol Hill.
One knew a couple from Anchorage who said they’d been astonished at what came out about Palin during the VP run. They’d voted for her, and liked her previously, but had no idea about her Wasilla experience, or the per diems for staying in her own home. They were shocked.
(Does not sound like they’re faithful Anchorage Daily News readers — and the ADN distinguished itself over the fall! — but one hopes Palin will have to do a lot of fence-mending and reforming of her own ways to retain her own state career. Keep her up there and out of the lower 48!
Wonder if Lisa Murkowski will benefit from any anti-Palin backlash, but that’s 2 years away…
December 3, 2008 at 10:03 am
Nah, root canals aren’t bad, more annoying than painful, I’ve had several, and on front teeth (or in my case a post) are pretty quick. I need a new bridge but really can’t afford it right now.
December 3, 2008 at 10:18 am
I agree that root canals are much worse in the run up to the procedure. After you are numb and then they remove the root nerve there is not much there to hurt. Good luck Brian, I had a terrible time with my teeth from the beginning.
December 3, 2008 at 10:35 am

Somehow, I can’t see Obama even letting Triumph through the doors….But wait! Maybe Triumph will interview the new White House dog.

Good luck with the root canal. Endodontics has come a long ways these days.

Good morning, everybody! It’s another cold, snowy day here in the North Country.
A few points:
1. You can get purebreds from a shelter at times. I rescued Nakita, a purebred Siberian Huskie, from our local shelter.
2. WTF is wrong with the people of Georgia??? Why on God’s green earth would they have elected him over Max Cleland in ‘02 and then re-elected him now? I agree with Sheila and Brian. That man is an evil scumbag.
3. Root canal isn’t bad unless the root is curved and twisted. Then it is a living HELL! Trust me on this!
December 3, 2008 at 11:58 am
go figure you have to a twisted root!
December 3, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Ah, Brian! You’re just getting to know the real me.

YOu know, the oldest Obama girl wanted a Goldendoodle, I wonder if this is going to be the consensus?

I am doing Chinese today Nanny! I love stir fry and learned from the best!
December 3, 2008 at 1:20 pm
I never taught you how to stir fry.
December 3, 2008 at 1:21 pm
My stir fry needs help here. Doesn’t work well on an electric stove.
December 3, 2008 at 1:29 pm
The Trick to stirfry on electric.
(1) Make sure you have a collar for the pan.
(2) Heat on high and Vent on full. Make sure the heat is ready.
(3) heat the pan on burner without the collar until just smoking a little
(4) put in the oil and and immediately your seasonings.
Use the collar when its getting too hot and then take it off to heat up again. I use a tongs to bring the collar over the burnner and then take it off again.
December 3, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Nannymm,
If you’ve got an electric stove, don’t use a wok. Can’t get hot enough. Use a skillet. I’ve heard cast iron skillets are good because they hold the heat when you throw in the cold ingredients. I don’t have any experience to back this up.
Perhaps Shelia and Brian could weigh in on this.
December 3, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Thanks for the tips! I was getting frustrated trying to get the heat right.
December 3, 2008 at 1:44 pm
I agree with dnd, on an electric stove use a heavy steel pot.
December 3, 2008 at 1:49 pm
And I’m telling you guys, I do this all the time.
Oh nany, the only cook ahead I do it the veg. I par cook them before
But out of demand for stirfry, I perfected this and it works.
Boys, don’t limit yourselves. ;0)
December 3, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I’l defer to Sheila, my expierence with electric stoves is very limited.
December 3, 2008 at 2:16 pm
I never argue with Shelia, cooking-wise, bobble-head that I am
But different electric ranges have different BTU ratings. Mine doesn’t have enough heat to really get a wok hot enough when sitting on a ring. And it loses the temperature quickly when you throw the stuff in. The thermal convection just doesn’t get the job done. But a flat skillet and convective heating works for me.
December 3, 2008 at 2:20 pm

December 3, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Back to the wok stuff, does anyone know of a skillet made of the same carbon steel they make woks out of? Nothing sticks to my wok (or cast iron skillet). I’d like to replace the teflon with a seasoned carbon skillet.
December 3, 2008 at 3:11 pm
you should get rid of all your teflon, it’s bad for your health. You should buy some quality steel heavy weight pans and use cooking spray.

December 3, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Nannymm,
A cast iron wok? That’ll sure build up those biceps lifting it up to dump the food out
Where can I get one?
December 3, 2008 at 5:13 pm
If you want to get an especially good non-stick. The All-Clad is layered with a diamond dust coating that is garenteed to be fine at temps above 500 degrees and doesn’t scratch as easily.
I have used them for the last 3 years and they are marvelous. They eliminate the danger of getting toxins that cause cancer in your system.
But they are expensive and last a lifetime…….
December 3, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Thanks Shelia. I’ve heard similar reviews about All-Clad. Isn’t one the big deals with them is that the interior is aluminum, which is a great conductor of heat?
ps. I think I paid $5 for my cast iron skillet. I’m pretty sure it will outlive me
December 3, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Yes, All clad has three layers and aluminum is the middle…..FANTASTIC pans. I can’t live without them.

Just one more reason not to go over to Dallas for any reason.
December 3, 2008 at 7:18 pm
I think talking occasionally about Effing Cookware is all right
December 3, 2008 at 7:25 pm
yeah, Doots, they chose that Crawford ranch pretty strategically. Googling driving times, they appear to be about 2 hours from Dallas or Austin, longer to San Antonio and about 4 hours to Houston. So they’re well set for having an easy commute to the ranch from any of the more interesting cities in which to live.
I wonder if the neighbors are regarding their arrival with pleasure or despair?
Lot of disruption from Secret Service, and we can only hope there will be plenty of colorful protesters gracing the new neighborhood frequently, with signs like “Scoot along to Paraguay” or “my kid’s on her 3rd deployment!” or “Viva Obama!”
December 3, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Doots,
Someone once told me that the only thing Dallas had that Ft. Worth didn’t was a great city 30 miles away
December 3, 2008 at 7:37 pm
he he he The other version of that is, “What can Ft Worth say that Dallas can’t?” Ft Worth is with in 35 miles of a major US city. Same thing. I prefer Ft Worth and now with the Bush clan moving in just one more reason to not make that drive.
December 3, 2008 at 7:59 pm
If Bush doesn’t like being stuck in traffic, wait ’till his motorcade gets stuck on the LBJ during rush hour. Maybe he and Pickles will move to Carrolton or Plano.

December 3, 2008 at 9:50 pm
re the Philly paper: I didn’t spend too much time on it; headlines looked harmless enough. It was reading the bylines (Jonah Goldberg, Cal Thomas, Dennis Prager, Dick Morris, a few others) that were the tip off. Plus an article about how colleges aid and abet terrorism? That sounds a little frisky…

December 3, 2008 at 9:57 pm
I didn’t look at opinion. Well, I wonder why they had such a great little article on gay Awareness in Elementary schools? Probably to cause a panic?
December 3, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Well guys, time for TAPS and cooking my dinner.
CIO!
December 3, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Yes, to cause a panic.
December 3, 2008 at 10:24 pm
The gay awareness story appeared evenly written on first pass.
However, it’s not immediately apparent that “area schools” mentioned in the headline appears to be a few selective private schools named in the dead last paragraph, and not the public school district. (” Some of its Philadelphia area members include The Baldwin School, Chestnut Hill Academy, Germantown Academy, The Haverford School, Episcopal Academy and the Valley Forge Military Academy.”)
I wonder if it was a “give them enough rope” strategy, because author got program coordinator to talk about forging ahead on a sex-related topic without parental involvement.
Pertinent:
“…Because such curriculum doesn’t talk about sex per se, schools are not typically required to get parental consent before introducing the material into the classroom. Many teachers consider the curriculum necessary to provide safe classrooms.
“Programs that are designed to encourage respect and address bias are not included in ‘opt-out’ policies,” read a flyer that accompanied the documentary that was handed out at the screening. “By not including all students in LGBT-inclusive lessons, schools run the risk of conveying a message that it is somehow acceptable to engage in hurtful and disrespectful behavior when it comes to LGBT people.”
Plus, program coordinator also teaches at the Episcopal Academy.
You know, those wacky Episcopalians currently undergoing a schism over ordination the gay bishop?
Last clue: think this would have been worded slightly differently if intended as a sympathetic treatment:
Editor’s Note: This is the first part of an ongoing series on homosexuality in school curriculums.
All that said, I think it’s a pretty masterfully written piece.
December 3, 2008 at 10:37 pm
What did you expect in Georgia anyway. The Republican Fascist Nazi Party is made up of the following.
A: Sexual Perverts. Larry Craig. Airport Bathrooms.
B: Sexual Predators. Mark Folley. Pages.
C: Corruption. Ted Stevens. Contractors.
D: Sexual Molesters. Saxby Chambliss. Gropes Thirteen Year Old Granddaughter in RNC AD.
E: Traitors. Cheney. Libby and the Whole Bush Administration.
F: Racists and Bigots. Sarah Palin. White Separates.
G: Adulters: Larry Vittner. And many others.
H: War Criminals. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice and all the rest of the Bush Administration, Republican House and Senate.
I’m sure that you can list many other examples of the Republican Fascist Nazi Party than those I’ve listed above so…..
That’s everything you need to know about Republicans.

Hi dog…
No not yet. I got the stand and the Blu-Ray Home Theater as well as a Digital Receiver for the old set, however I’m waiting until I go on the last of my vacation days I have to use before Dec. 31st. or lose.
I also am still in the process of moving the living room around and currently waiting for my landlord to strengthen the bracket for my blinds so they don’t fall down on me.
I refuse to do it since they have raised my rent every year since they bought this property. They raised me $30 dollars a month this year so let them do the work. Also I don’t have any power tools which would be needed to add more screws to the upper area of the wood support that the blinds are attached to.
They are heavy and the wood support is only screwed in along the bottom of the strip. It needs screws added along the top to pull the wood support back to the wall.
I ask him Monday and if its not done by Friday I’ll ask his wife when its going to be done. I really don’t want to move anything else until that’s fixed.
God Bless.
PS: I’ll let everyone know when I get it as well as how long I will be without my computer once I start moving the rest of the furniture.
December 3, 2008 at 10:55 pm
well, as long as those pets are safe from having any blinds fall on them!
Can you imagine how Animal Planet is going to look to the kitties? It’s going to be IMAX.

dog…
That’s what I worry about. Baby lays in the window between the blinds and I’ll be sitting on the couch which is now directly in front of the blinds.
The Blu-Ray came with the first tape of Planet Earth. I don’t know whats on the first episode, but I will really be impressed with it when I see it.
I saw a little bit when they were advertising the series so it should be awesome.

AP: you are lucky about the “awesome.” Don’t get jaded on us; this life so beats being 6 feet under, no matter how difficult the circumstances might seem.
But I know that you know that, as do all of us who miss loved ones.
December 3, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Well time to go and see who’s bashing who at you know where.
God Bless.
December 3, 2008 at 11:05 pm
dog…
Don’t worry. I won’t get jaded.
God Bless.

Speaking of Ariana: just popped over to TW looking for Brian (who was indeed there). Caught Patsi putting Andrew Sullivan down again for being a former rightwing crackpot. A favorite target since she hits him and some of us, for liking Andrew.
Might someone ask her her opinion of Ariana? Can women change their stripes, but not men?
I would say having the benefit of someone who can make a cogent and thoughtful argument — on either side of the aisle — is good and helps one sharpen one’s thinking.
Oh well.
December 3, 2008 at 11:11 pm
dog…
Unfortunately no, Patsi can not change her stripes. Oh you were talking about Ariana, sorry misunderstood you.
God Bless.
December 3, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Whoops……
Meant Andrew Sullivan. And he can change his stripes.
God Bless.

Night all.

It’s kind of interesting watching this schism wherein the Episcopal conservatives align themselves with African Anglican churches.
I am unchurched (still attend Mass from time to time), but have thought about trying out whatever part of the Episcopal Church shakes out that retains its gay clergy, leaders and allows female bishops.
The Episcopal Church is allegedly so close to Catholicism, my birth religion.
Although having been majorly disappointed by one Church, and not believing so much of what Christianity demands, I hesitate at joining any church at all.
Although it might be comforting to attend shake out/Gene Robinson/Kathleen Schori style Episcopal services, led by women or married clergy, and sing along with the beautiful hymns.
But I think you can find spirituality without an established religion — that, in fact, the major sects too often divide more than they align.
I’m not sure there is anything but deep deep darkness upon death.
And I think too many of the rules were made by man, men specifically. Institution builders.
The Golden Rule serves well.
It too often conflicts with established religion.

Anon-p, I love Siberian Huskies. My Nakita is a reall sweetie.
Dog’s eya, what ya got against effing cookware? I love it! And I love effing cooking and baking, too.
Brian, I don’t think I’ll be adding The Bulletin to my daily reading list.
December 4, 2008 at 12:36 am
Oh Nanny! I love Effing bakeware!
can’t do without it……The only bakeware that levels my Bobble enough that I can evenly bake!

I have a friend who is an episcopal Priest. As it looks to me, nothing is diferan but that they can marry and women have a larger role.
I hope your journey is fulfilling Dog.
December 4, 2008 at 12:54 am
Yeah, I suspect there is very little difference betw Epis and Catholic, save the earth-shattering ones (for the Catholic Church!) you mentioned. Isn’t Anglican and Episc a direct offshoot from Henry VIII’s Catholicism? (Trivia answer: both he and Elizabeth I died practicing Catholics.)
However, given the experience with Catholicism, and how much is medieval about that religion: why does one need a church at all? So much is social, when it comes down to it, and dogma of any type becomes unsatisfying.

Along the lines of Jack Handy’s Deep Thoughts:
Real Simple’s thought of the day:
There are no miracles for those that have no faith in them.
— French proverb

But might be something to that. Look for the miracles.

sending hugs to nanny and harbor — they know why — and to other backchannelers on general principle.

Catholic and Episcopal churches are nearly identical. in fact, the Vatican recognizes Episcopal priests as validly ordained and the Sacraments of the Episcopal church are also considered valid for Catholics to receive.

So, if you’ve been following the many tin foil hat wearing crack-a-lacks that the election season brought out of the woodwork, with their Whitey tapes and their stern warnings of Vietnam gulag deprogramming, you’d know that one of the more persistent claims made against President-Elect Barack Obama is that he’s not an American citizen. Nowadays, you’ll hear the yammerings over Obama’s birth certificate put in terms of a looming “Constitutional crisis,” though, as Unattributable.com aptly states, “there would have to be actual proof that Obama wasn’t a natural born US citizen to spark any kind of crisis.” It’s complete madness — sour grapes serving as the fuel to rampant paranoid lunacy. But it’s also sadly persistent. One fool has appealed a case based solely on “Rumors On The Interwebs” all the way to the Supreme Court, and some other nimrod bought ads in the Chicago Tribune this week.

nanny: I forgot that. You do run into a few Catholic churches with Episcopal priests. Hmmm.
December 4, 2008 at 1:23 am
I take it you are referring to GORDO?
December 4, 2008 at 1:26 am
And t hey can stay married! I have a close friend who is a RC priest and he jokes that he should have been ordained as an Episcopal priest, gotten married, and then “converted” back to Catholicism. Best of both worlds, as he sees it. LOL
BTW….he’s drop dead GORGEOUS! I call him Father Whatawaste!
December 4, 2008 at 1:31 am
GORDO is nuts, certifiably so, I think. But he isn’t the only loony out there who believes Obama isn’t a natural born citizen. This whole thing reminds me of the Clinton haters who insist to this day that Bill is a rapist and Hillary is a lesbian and that they killed Vince foster, etc. The GORDO’s of this world will never let up on their crazy theories. So sit back and watch them fight their insane battle. It’s going to be a long show.
December 4, 2008 at 1:38 am
Yes, isn’t that nice: any Episcopalian male priest can convert and serve a parish, whereas if you are born a Catholic woman — out of luck. Your gender and not your faith or capability makes the decision for you. I can’t get past that.
Greek Orthodox priests can be married, but the higher clergy must be celibate.
====
Sad story. Our parish had a really handsome young priest many years ago. I’d already left for college. My younger sisters called him “Father Fox.” ”
He committed suicide when it was revealed in the press that he lived with a boyfriend in DC and commuted to serve his parish.
That has got to change.
December 4, 2008 at 1:42 am
I can’t understand what quirk makes it so hard for them to accept that Obama is constitutionally eligible and will be their president.
We didn’t see this with George Bush, who was elevated by the Supreme Court.
But GORDO is an interesting case. It’s like fighting against the tide coming in. He can’t prevail, and what prevents him from conceptualizing that Obama is eligible? And will be inaugurated?
Does GORDO have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)?
December 4, 2008 at 1:46 am
OCD? I doubt it. Some type of psychosis seems more likely. But, I’m not a doctor, just a psychiatric nurse.
December 4, 2008 at 1:48 am
Well, good night, all! Sleep well.
December 4, 2008 at 2:05 am
Hey Good Night Nanny,
feel well!
December 4, 2008 at 2:09 am
Ineresting thoughts all on Episcopal church and Catholic.
As far as faith and beliefs. It all comes down to that.
there will never be everything you like about organized religion Dog. Bottom line until the end of time is faith.
Faith in God and belief that there is a living God is the bottom line.
There will always be too many man-made rules because there are so many intelligent beings on the face of the earth at one time.
The brilliance of life is the very choice you have to choose.
Good Night!
December 4, 2008 at 2:15 am
Good night! Sleep tight!
December 4, 2008 at 2:16 am
By The Way,
You can certainly have faith by yourself and choose to worship by yourself. However, it really is more fun to worship with others. Makes it more like a celebration. Thats why I choose to worship in a church or a group like me.
And finally, you will find that most people on this earth do believe that there is something for us after death. I remember a statistic this year that said about 80% of the world believed in life after death.
Doesn’t make it true. But then, “nothing” after death may not be true either.
I personally believe there is a place our souls dwell after physical death.
And it ain’t Effiing Cookware.
Good night!
Steve dear, Good Luck with the new Play!!!!!

More from Georgia—Chambliss is talking up Palin’s appearences here as the driving force behind his win.
The Democrats have a lot of work to do to strengthen their party. I really wish Dean would stick around….
