Fantasy Cabinet Pick – Round 2

Well now that we know who the next VP will be, and John Edwards is,  shall we say, temporarily side lined,  it’s time to up date our cabinet picks.  You can view your prior picks at:

http://www.brianarens.com/blog/fantasycabinet/fantasycabinetpicks.html

Later today I’ll make the updates to the chart.  Please start your post with the word “cabinet” so I’ll be able to quickly find them.  Also I will be opening the chat room at 8:00 PM EDT so we can chat during the convention.

http://www.brianarens.com/blog/chat.htm

Also we need posts for the week, don’t make me get out the whip and the chair, you know I will!  Some commentary on the convention would be grand.

kinda OT ok ok very much OT but this is too choice. I lifted this from Huffpo in the comments section.

II WATCHED JOHN MC CAIN AT SADDLEBACK CHURCH. A TEAR WELLED UP IN HIS EYES, AND HE TOLD THE STORY OF A GUARD WHO CAME UP TO HIM ON CHRISTMAS. THE GUARD NEVER SAID A WORD, BUT MOVED CLOSER TO MC CAIN. — THEN THE GUARD DREW A CROSS IN THE DIRT WITH
HIS FOOT, AND AFTER A SHORT WHILE ERASED THE CROSS, AND STROLLED OFF. WOW WHAT A CHRISTIAN STORY. WHAT A WONDERFUL STORY,—-JESUS CHRIST HOVERING OVER JOHN MC CAIN RIGHT THEIR IN THAT PRISON CAMP. —— RIGHT?——- WRONG——THE PROBLEM WITH THAT
STORY IS THAT IT IS NOT JOHN MC CAINS STORY AT ALL. ——THAT GUARD, CROSS, STORY WAS LIFTED AND PLAGIARIZED DIRECTLY FROM THE PAGES OF THE RUSSIAN STORY: “GULAG ARCHIPELAGO” WRITTEN BY ALEKSANDR I. SOLZHENITSYN —-CAN YOU IMAGINE MC CAIN LIED IN CHURCH WHILE FACING A MILLION CHRISTIANS. ————-WHAT KIND OF A MAN OF GOD IS THAT?

    nice huh?

  8. Chef Sheila

The Negative crap I’m hearing from the Press is amazing…..

  9. dog's eye view

it’s scarifying Sheila. All negative and riling up Clinton supporters and airing McCain’s ads aimed at them, for free.

Have turned CNN off, but my mom will watch it incessantly later.

Hope the convention goes very well and that the Clintons wake up and realize this was her last shot. If she wants a cabinet post or anything over the next two terms, or sincerely cares that Democrats NEED to win this one, she needs to give it her all.

She is not going to get another bite at the apple.

  10. Chef Sheila

What erks me is that the Press doesn’t care enough about the country to give equal time to positive and they are preening and hoping for a fight on the floor while talking about statiscally. How the conventions that are not unified and get negative press are the ones were the Candidate is not elected.

i mean they are praying for a floor fight and I think are going to try and get one started.

  11. Chef Sheila

This comment I found says it all….

“…the Clintons have become the Ralph Nader of this election. They could quell the rage of Hillary voters who would actually elect McCain, but they can’t face second place…They’re spoilers, and at a truly cfritical time in our history…”

  12. Chef Sheila

Here’s a positive piece for the Dems.

Why it’s Good News for Democrats that Polls Say One In Four Clinton Backers Still Aren’t Sold on Barack

FOX News getting mobbed by Protesters in Denver….watch out FOX!

  14. dnd

    Cabinet Picks:

    State: Bill Richardson
    Defense: Hagel
Justice: Patrick Fitzgerald (it’s Fitzmas all over!)
Homeland Security: Gen. Russel Honore (with Richard Clarke at CIA)
Treasury: Robert Rubin (or Paul O’Neill)
HHS: Elizabeth Edwards (or Bill Bradley)
    Energy: T. Boone Pickens
    Education: Bob Kerrey (or Hillary)
    Agriculture: Katherine Sebelius
    Interior: Brian Schweitzer
    Labor: Robert Reich
Commerce: Warren Buffet (or Leon Panetta)
Veterans Affairs: Horsedooty or Shelia (or Leon Panetta)
    Transportation: Federico Pena
    HUD: Lawrence Summers

I hope the Obama campaign is reading the blog today 😉

  15. Chef Sheila

I think they are concentrating on registering MORE new voters to counter the stagnant Old Gurad….

  16. dnd

    Shelia,
Christine Todd Whitman at Interior? After what she did at EPA, NO WAY!

I think it’s crucial to place a western conservationist/realist at Interior. Most of America’s public lands are in the west, most under the BLM (Interior) and Forest Service (Agriculture). That’s why I picked who I did for those slots.

Whitman might do well at Transportation though…

  17. Chef Sheila

The reason I added Tood Whitman is because she was trying to make some very inovative choices for the Country and was chopped off at the knees. She didn’t do anything to EPA it was the Bush administration and that is why she resigned.

I think Tood Whitman is an appropriate across the aile person.

  18. Chef Sheila

I greatly admire your picks from the west. I was trying to think of across the aile picks, that is all. I stand by my “Fantasy” ;0)

  19. dnd

    Shelia,
I like a lot of your picks, just not that one 😉
Whitman isn’t as bad as her press for the reasons you state, and a cabinet office would give her the chance to show people that. Just not Interior. Needs to be somebody from the west.

ps. I thought you’d like my picks for VA 😉

  20. Chef Sheila

If you notice, some of my picks are UofC and berkely.

I think Horsedooty and Sheila would be the better pick of VA.

    {{lol pat each other on the back}}

  21. Chef Sheila

    BTW,

Having Braised Pork with Chili Verde for Brunch! Yummy

  22. dnd

Ummm…. braised pork with chili verde. It’s not just for breakfast any more 😉

  23. dnd

FWIW, the five day forecast for Denver shows Thursday to be a beautiful day. While it’s hard to predict the weather that far out, this time of year the weather is more stable here than any other time.

  24. horsedooty

    sheila,

shouldn’t you really eat beef with Chili Verde? There is a reason why no one writes songs about Pigboys. You never heard of a song that goes, “Get along little pigboy, get along”.

  25. Chef Sheila

I can’t wait to start the convention prime time. This will she or won’t he crap is very tiring.

I would really love to see Senator Kennedy tonight. I hope he’s up to a wave or something.

  26. Chef Sheila

LOL Sorry Doots! Its not an exclusive condiment or chili rather, for Beef .

The savoriness to the chili flavor really marries well with pork.

  27. Chef Sheila

Besides, No Pigboys on the range but a lot of fatback and bacon in the chuck wagons!

  28. Chef Sheila

    BTW Doots,

I was laughing so hard I all most….really al most spit up my Diet Pepsi all over my laptop.

  29. Chef Sheila

Dana Perino is in Denver…..I mean, they are really fighting hard instead of letting us have our convention.

  30. Chef Sheila

Luke Russert is now an employee of NBC news?

  31. Chef Sheila

OMG he sounds like his Dad!

  32. Chef Sheila

Someone “B”Slap Bill Clinton…..this is not his Convention.

  33. dnd

    Doots,
Pork is for green chili, beef is for red.

BTW, the Hatch chilies have flooded Colorado. And the hot variety this year is HOT!

People in Pueblo will tell you that the puebla is better than Hatch. I prefer espanola from Espanola. But they grow the most, by far, in Hatch.

BTW, for you non-chili-heads out there, Hatch is a town in NM, not a chili variety, but everybody calls the chilies from Hatch are all called Hatch.

  34. dnd

CO Sen. Ken Salazar needs to take Obama and Biden to Rockmount Ranchwear and get ’em a hat. It’s just a couple of blocks from the Pepsi Center.

If Rockmount sounds familiar, it’s because their CEO Jack Weil died a couple of weeks ago. He was 107.

  35. Chef Sheila

I have yet to taste the Hatch and I had never heard of it until you dnd.

  36. dnd

    Shelia,
Judging by their appearance and taste, I’d wager that Hatch chilies are Anaheim variety. The hot ones are probably NuMex Big Jim, the medium ones probably NuMex 6-4, and the mild ones NuMex Joe E. Parker. Just a guess.

  37. Chef Sheila

    This is entertaining.

Fox News reporter roughed up by protesters. Chanting “!@#$ FOX News”.

  38. horsedooty

We get Hatch chilis here at a grocery called Central Market. They have a big festival there this time of year. Excellent stuff

  39. dnd

    Doots,
Hatch are in Safeway, the local version of Kroeger, and all the local stores. A buck a pound. In addition, on weekends there are roasters set up in parking lots, farmer’s markets, and produce stands. I love this time of year 😉

ps. Shelia, Doots was the first to bring up Hatch. So blame him for getting me started

  40. dog's eye view

who is the gentleman in the photo with JFK and Robt McNamara?

  41. Chef Sheila

Dog what are you talking about?

  42. Chef Sheila

Oh i see, Don’t know….too long ago for me.

  43. dog's eye view

looks like a very young shah of Iran

  44. Chef Sheila

Wolf Blitzer is trying single handedly to divide the Dem party even more. Pracitcally daring everyone to divide for an exclusive.

  45. Chef Sheila

You know Dog, All you have to do is google the three and the word picture and see if you can find it. Googling can be fun.

  46. Chef Sheila

Thank Goodness for Chuck Todd. Mentioning that he thinks the Press is making too much about this so called division in the Party.

  47. Chef Sheila

Hurray for Chuck Todd telling the truth about how the Clinton people getting sold a bill of goods when in February the race was over and she kept going anyway.

  48. Karolenna

    Chuck is such a sweetheart.

  49. afternoon peeps, happy convention week!

  50. dnd

That was an interesting segment with Chuck Todd. Tweety interviewing Hilary supporters who are now behind Obama was interesting too. This could be an interesting convention.

  51. So Bill is throwing yet another hissy fit I see. So pathetic.

  52. dnd

Hey! Where are all the fantasy cabinet picks? So far just Shelia and I. Don’t tell me guys don’t have some ideas. 🙄

  53. dnd

Tweety just interviewed a couple of puma’s. It’s clear they are Republicans. Unhinged, out of control, irrational “Obama is a Muslim” Republicans. Tweety asked one for sources for her claim. She replied: “I’m not going to tell you.”

  54. I saw that, and then he called them insane, that was great.

  55. Tweety is coming down on the PUMAs, good for him!

  56. dnd

For those who want to see local coverage of the convention, I recommend the following:

    http://www.denverpost.com/

    http://www.rockymountainnews.com/

    http://www.9news.com/

    http://www.thedenverchannel.com/index.html

    http://cbs4denver.com/

The first two are Denver papers; the last three are the local affiliates of the three broadcast networks.

  57. dnd

If you’ve seen the news reports of tornadoes in Colorado, they won’t impact the convention. They’re south and east of Denver.

The only possible impact of the convention is if they come close to the airport.

  58. Chef Sheila

CSPAN has all the fun. Inbetween the speeches are all the delegates rocking out.

  59. Chef Sheila

Wow John legend on CSPAN singing

  60. Maybe we can steer those tornadoes towards the Clinton’s hotel.

  61. Chef Sheila

Wow I love delegates looking like fools having a great time. 🙂

  62. Chef Sheila

Nothing like earth Wind and Fire to get the party started.

  63. Chef Sheila

    Wow Powerful little girl singing

  64. The chat room is open

    http://www.brianarens.com/blog/chat.htm

Just use whatever name you use on the blog, no password necessary, if your name doesn’t work try another, it means someone on the chat server is already using that nick. We have pretty unique nicks, it shouldn’t be a problem

  65. Chef Sheila

FAUX Non-News Chris Wallace talking about Teddy Kennedy and Michelle Obama being a wasted night…..

  66. Outstanding first night, dramatic in all the right ways!

  67. Chef Sheila

    CNN’s Gergen is critisizing too….

  68. Chef Sheila

    Thank God For Hillary Rosen

  69. Chef Sheila

James Carville can just turn green…..

  70. Chef Sheila

CNN is not going to get much from me this election cycle. Talking like FAUX News

  71. Chef Sheila

Michelle Obama Knocked this one out of the Park! I was crying and she honored Hillary Clinton. I was so proud!

  72. Chef Sheila

what was the sentance. Hillary CLinton cracked the glass into 18 million pieces.

    Just up: WaPo’s Anne Kornblut

Clinton Is Trying To Move Forward
Obama Signaled Early That He Was Unlikely To Pick Her for No. 2

MOLINE, Ill., Aug. 25 — In a private meeting with Sen. Barack Obama after she conceded the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton made a request: that he consider her for his vice presidential running mate, but not put her through the charade of being vetted if he was not serious.

Obama told Clinton then it was unlikely he would choose her, people familiar with the conversation said. Obama did not want to lead her on and, after campaigning against her for more than a year, already had a sense that their pairing would not be the right fit.

  74. Chef Sheila

    Rachelle,

“I was thinking about Pat watching this speech” LOL

  75. Hee Haw did you just see Tweety slam Pat on religion!

  76. dog's eye view

    Andrew Sullivan:

One of the best, most moving, intimate, rousing, humble, and beautiful speeches I’ve heard from a convention platform. Maybe she should be running for president. You don’t need any commentary from me. This was a home-run. And sincere. Thank God that in the end, the truth struggles out there. Just look at her mother’s face.

    and later:

    A reader writes:
I am a former military police officer and she made me cry.

  77. Chef Sheila

Tweety Slammed Pat and I’m very glad

  78. dog's eye view

I just could not get over her mother’s intro to the film and her mom’s sitting there gracious and proud.

I supported Obama because of his message — you will recall I was an Edwards supporter who suddenly realized I’d become an Obama person — but gotta tell you: the idea of a young black American family in the White House, and Michelle’s wonderful brother and mother — I just love it. Icing on the cake.

  79. Chef Sheila

Ken Burns, Mr Civil War, made the Kennedy Documentary….very cool.

  80. dog's eye view

Larry King Live: on the Democratic Convention: “the Republicans will tell us what they think”

TV is off. Immediately. Can the Democrats not even get their message out before the GOP frames it? Apparently not. CNN is in to fairness.

  81. Steve (AH)

Sorry I missed the chat gang….thinking of you all, but a very busy week at work…raining hammers and nails here…will try to get in this evening.

  82. Kathy

hey I went to bed- what did Chris say to Pat about religion?
One thing about Matthews- no matter your feelings about him, he has a strong feeling about racial relations in this country and abroad- the media dances round the racial “problem”- and Chris seems to be genuinely “proud of his country” at this moment.

  83. dnd

Paul Begala reports on Imus that Ted Kennedy had to wheeled to the end of the stage. An hour before the speech his advisers didn’t think he was well enough to go on.

And then he goes and gives a strong, powerful speech. Remarkable.

  84. Chef Sheila

Pat Buchanon couldn’t find too much to really complain about last night. So just before his segment was finished he started railing (inapropriately) about the fact that Religion wasn’t mentioned and that the military wounded were just touched on. Pat was full of it, BTW.

So Matthews took him down a peg. As a last say of that segment. It was more like Matthews slapping Buchanon’s hand.

  85. Chef Sheila

Begala on CNN last night, took Carville down a peg too. he corrected Carvilles bad behavior as inapropriate and said that James just didn’t know what he was talking about.

Carville took Kennedy and Michelle down for not attacking.

  86. It’s a 4 day convention, no one wants to see four days of attack, people keep making the mistake of thinking Obama is a sprinter, he’s not, he’s a marathon runner.

  87. Chef Sheila

Bill schnieder from CNN making a great case for the positive night last night.

The passing of power from the Kennedy’s to the Obamas

  88. Not a big surprise at James Carville’s reaction, he’s so yesterday and bound to resent the world has moved on.
