This Year’s Campaign Language Revealed by Chef Sheila

The Rosetta Stone

The Rosetta Stone

As a change of pace, lets talk about what this year’s Campaign Launguage really means to us. Yes, just us…..I mean just a little baby blog with a bunch snarky bloggers having a little brain  storming session, OK?   OK…

But rather than promote one ticket over the other, I believe the best thing I can do today is define the words, phrases and declarations that have melded into new meanings in the furnace of this political campaign.

  • Abstinence-only education:      The theory that immature, hormone-exploding teens living in one of the most sexually active times in history will not benefit from any mention of contraception in schools. See also, “Jusst Say No…..Sorry Nancy, know that was all ready taken….”
  • Bridge to Nowhere:    Bridge to Somewhere, i.e., the White House, once position is changed from support to opposition.
  • Community organizer:     Hateful type of person who pads his resume by helping poor people.
  • Conservative:      A person who has his underwear perpetually in a bunch but blames the laundry of low paid workers for his discomfort.
  • Executive experience:     A newly important qualification for high office that only former mayors of small towns are said to possess.
  • Fair and balanced:     The motto of a TV network catering to viewers seeking news that is unfair and unbalanced covering those they hate.
  • Foreign policy experience:     A special knowledge shared only by war heroes or governors of states bordering foreign countries.
  • Journalist:     A writer who is accused of bias by people who are hopelessly biased.
  • Liberal:     A person who believes that consenting adults may have any sort of sex they like but shouldn’t be permitted to share a cigarette afterwards.
  • Lipstick:     A cosmetic applied thickly to all campaign issues as a weapon of mass “Distraction”.
  • Socialized medicine:     Any plan that removes million of Americans from the ranks of those without health insurance.
  • “The fundamentals of our economy are strong”:     A political judgment best taken as a suggestion to stock your pantry with canned goods.
  • Right Wing Talk Radio:     A medium of propaganda beyond the wildest dreams of Dr. Goebbels and the Third Reich.
  • Wind energy:    Joe Biden……hey!  Joe’s little appreciated talents are finaly being seen a a valuable commodity this season.

    Retread from the last thread

On washington Journal this morning, I was hearing the cry of “Those Socialists” from the Republicans……are they nuts? Their President has been forced by their greed to bail out. This country is full of brain washed people.

  3. chefsheila

Selfish, selfcentered elitist, arrogant, evil, !@#$% like Phill Grahm did this….along with the same right wing !@#$ (all of the above) that went right along on the gravey train. The only ones defending at this point are …!@#$ (all of the above) ignorant, uneducated !@#$$ and pons of the right wing. I mean how much koolaid with you guys drink to let these others control your minds.

In the next few years you !@#$ will understand just how much personal saving the “Socialist” programs are going to give you.

Republican talking points today: Barack is voting “present” on the financial crisis, due to his measured response. McCain has a “detailed” plan.

I took a bunch of economics in college, and while I am certainly no expert, I can tell you that since McCain on Monday called the fundamentals of the economy sound, changing positions and putting together a viable, effective, detailed plan in five days is questionable. Even if you have Phil Graham do it 😉

Yesterday (I think) Brian thought Bush was just telling people (Paulson, Bernanke, etc.) to make it just go away. If that’s the case, that’s the smartest decision he’s made in eight years. Finance is a hugely complex field, and you don’t want somebody that goes with his gut and shoots from the hip making decisions on these issues.

  11. This is from Krugman’s column for the Times.

“Maybe the plan will look fine once we see the details. But while Paulson and Bernanke are a lot better than the people we might have had in there (thank you, Harriet Meiers!), their track record to date does not lead to the automatic conclusion that they know what they’re doing.”

Here’s a Rich Thought……Do you suppose that Rove and the rest want Obama to win too, because in their heart of hearts, they know the DEMS have better management capabilities and will do the dirty work that they just can’t do?

David says: If you’re a Democrat and you prefer wine over beer, you are an “elitist.” If you’re a Republican and you prefer a beer heiress over your first wife, you are a “committed family man.”

Krugman found an interesting thing yesterday:

“Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.”

    — John McCain

Expect to see that in a commercial soon!

Yes, the 538 thing is fantastic. We need a great debate from the Big O. Wife and I are going to a viewing party in Western NC.

  25. chefsheila

Thanks Bev. That was a great read. Except the comment at the end. I will never understand what is wrong with Obama, when in comes to some Clinton Supporters that are voting for Obama, but making grudging remarks, all the same.

OMG! A hillbilly for Obama?…. Yea, I am

    http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/omg-a-hillbilly-for-obama-yea.php

I don’t yet think that Obama can win IN THIS COUNTY, but I do believe he will indeed make it closer. If he does make it close in Appalachia we just might see a national landslide on election night for Obama

  32. Yeah Shelia,
won’t it just chap the closet-racist-suburban-republicans’-asses, when the day comes that they can’t bank on and control the “redneck hillbillies vote.”

    I hope it happens…..

    Obama / Biden 2008 and beyond ! 🙂

  33. Hey Bev,

thanks for that link….I have sent in on to a few friends…hopefully they will read it, I think it might increase their understanding.

  34. lee\c

I thought I would post this again since it was the very last post on yesterdays blog. Please forgive.

I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer especially with regard to financial matters. I was not sure what I thought the bailout. I read in the Dallas Morning News Thursday edition in the Opinion Pages that local radio jock (rabid conservative) was against the bailout. His point was the market forces should be allowed to take over. Law of the jungle. Survival of the Fittest I figure that was the point I needed to be for the bailout. I have never read or heard him say anything I agreed with since he moved to the area. I am now comfortable with my decisions.

  35. chefsheila

    Hi Lee,

Thanks for the repost. I guess I would say that if the president has made a decision to do that, a cascade of failure would have begun, not just here but all over the world.

Here in this country, not only more banks, but also the value of CD’s, Government bonds, Mutuals, 401K’s, Government pentions, think of anything of value that you don’t have your hot little hands on, and it would have been gone plus 99% plus of small businesses would have been gone too.

Large corporations would ahve been laying off more and more……I mean the sky is the limit here. Because in the end, all of our so called wealth has been made virtual with the expending of our “Solid” wealth. All of what we had as a country is gone. To the Chinese and the Saudi’s and Dubai.

So I guess after that long winded explanation as I have grown to understand it, I leave to you whether you rethink your position.

Good Luck and thanks for posting. Come again. We like to have visiters become regulars!

  36. chefsheila

    That’s “If our President Hadn’t Made a decision”……

  37. At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.

McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/21/us/politics/21debate.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

  38. chefsheila

    PAAALLEEEEESE!

  39. colleen

gee, those crappy debating skills of Sarah’s should put her in good stead when she’s potentially negotiating life and death situations with world-wide heads of state. Maybe she should be allowed to have an “open book test” surrounded with advisors telling her how to answer questions In what regard, Charlie? Thanks but no thanks

  40. i knew you’d like that Times article, LOL

  41. “If my opponent had his way, the millions of Floridians who rely on it would’ve had their Social Security tied up in the stock market this week. Millions would’ve watched as the market tumbled and their nest egg disappeared before their eyes,” he said.

“I know Sen. McCain is talking about a ‘casino culture’ on Wall Street, but the fact is, he’s the one who wants to gamble with your life savings, and that is not going to happen when I’m president. When I’m president, we’re not going to gamble with Social Security.”

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/20/campaign.wrap/index.html?eref=rss_politics

  42. chefsheila

Pick, pick, pick it away Senator Obama. 😛

  43. dog's eye view

re VP debate: that is called lowering expectations.

Gov. Sarah could be quite good in that forum, actually — she’s had some experience in her political campaigns in Alaska, and if she comes across as sincere and comfortable, that might be enough for some viewers, facts be damned.

  44. dnd

I think in exchange for accommodating the McCain campaign’s demands for the veep debate, the Obama campaign should insist that Palin’s ears be searched for one of those tiny wireless earbuds 😉

  45. A new Quad-City Times and Lee Enterprises poll of Iowa voters shows Democrat Barack Obama holding a commanding lead in the state with a little more than six weeks to go before Election Day.

In a survey of 600 likely voters who vote regularly in state elections, 53 percent said they would support Obama, and 39 percent said they would support Republican John McCain.
