President Elect Obama’s First Fireside Chat Ala Youtube

President-elect Barack Obama taped Saturday’s weekly Democratic address not just for listeners, but for YouTube viewers last Friday. And he plans to keep videotaping the radio addresses after taking the oath of office on Jan. 20.

Before then, the videos will be posted on Obama’s transition Web site,

Obama is turning the radio address into a “multimedia opportunity” to communicate directly with the American people, his transition team said in a statement.

The modern era’s Saturday radio addresses were initiated by President Ronald Reagan and have evolved into a weekly fixture of the presidency, accompanied by a response from the party out of power.

The broadcasts owe a debt to President Franklin Roosevelt, who seized on the new technology that was all the rage in the 1930s for his “fireside chats,” famously reassuring through times of Depression and war.

YouTube, the video-sharing Web site embraced by Obama, didn’t exist when George W. Bush was elected president. Bush does put the audio of his radio addresses online, at

I kinda like hearing guitar playing when I go to Each to his or her own, I guess.

  2. I guess this means presidents from now on won’t be able to do the “weekly radio address” in their jammies.

  3. chefsheila

    lol Not!

Good to see Steve here again. Can’t wait until January for his return. In the meantime, Good Luck on the Basketball season

  4. horsedooty

kinda looks like it huh? Does the President wear Jammies or go full commando when sleeping in the White House.

  5. dnd

    You’re up early!

Given the way the campaign took advantage of the internet, this doesn’t come as a big surprise.

  6. dnd

Was Napolitano picked for Homeland Security because she can see Mexico from her house? 🙂

  7. chefsheila

Sebilious just got the nod for Labor, I believe I just heard…… or was it EPA?

  8. chefsheila

Hey good morning everyone. I usually up at this time. 😉

  9. chefsheila

Hey Craig has my picture up over at Trail Mix. I won the electoral bet

  10. Yes Sheila, today is your 15 minutes of fame on Trail Mush.

  11. chefsheila

Doots, I’d wear Jammies. lol They really do stand in the hall way when he’s sleeping.

  12. horsedooty

congrats Chef Sheila. Your 15 min of fame on TM starts now.

  13. chefsheila

    But where’s my prize? lol

  14. You get bragging rights, shitty prize, but hey what can you do!

  15. chefsheila

    Bragging Rights Are Good

  16. chefsheila

Could Sebelious become EPA? I wonder

  17. dnd

    Pritzer at Commerce?

  18. really that would mean 3 women in the cabinet, can you do that?

  19. dnd

Weird, since Obama is such a sexist.

  20. chefsheila

LOL I would certainly love o see a bunch of women and African Americans really make this country groove!

  21. Go on Sheila, shake your groove thing for us!

  22. chefsheila

Brian, I might clear the room

  23. dnd

He needs a couple of Hispanics on the cabinet. Clinton had Richardson, Pena and Cisneros.

  24. Don’t worry Sheila, we’ll give you a “wide birth”

  25. chefsheila

    beside’s Richardson, who else?

  26. dnd

Joe Baca, Bustamante, Linda Chavez-Thompson would be good for a spot somewhere in Labor. There are tons of ’em in the west, southwest, and elsewhere. I heard rumors for Ken Salazar for Interior, but I’d prefer him to stay in the Senate.

The Economist on the GOP: “Ship of Fools: Political parties die from the head down”

” … As [we see it], the title of the “stupid party” now belongs to the Tories’ transatlantic cousins, the Republicans.

There are any number of reasons for the Republican Party’s defeat on November 4th. But high on the list is the fact that the party lost the battle for brains. Barack Obama won college graduates by two points, a group that George Bush won by six points four years ago. He won voters with postgraduate degrees by 18 points. And he won voters with a household income of more than $200,000—many of whom will get thumped by his tax increases—by six points. John McCain did best among uneducated voters in Appalachia and the South.”

    [Take that, Mudcat!]

And there’s more. And comments appended at top right: they might be fun to cruise too.

  28. BevnTempe

Congratulations to ChefSheila for winning the Crawford’s List prize.

Pre-Congratulations to Janet N, our wonderful governor, who will be joining the Obama cabinet. Sorry to see her leave, because the Sec of State, a Republican, takes her place.

  29. chefsheila

Thanks Bev and Sorry to hear of your delema. I hope this Guy is a good worker and is not so partison

  30. Well I’m off Long Island for the day, Sheila keep an eye on the gang, you know how rowdy they can get.

  31. dnd

Today’s Joe Biden’s birthday. It’s also Joe Walsh’s birthday! Biden is 66, Walsh is 61.

  32. chefsheila

    Happy Brithday to both. 🙂

Well, I’m off to cook and cook and cook……I’ll be back around 5pm eastern. lol So weird for me.

  34. chefsheila

i’m beginning to REALLY respect pickens…..someday I may forgive him for the Swiftboat stuff too.

Looks like Rahm Emanual will be speaking soon. I wonder what we’ll hear about?

  35. dnd

i like ol’ T. Boone too. But I find some serious flaws in the Pickens Plan. I’ll write up a thread on what I think is good and bad about it.

BTW, from his web site about his latest book, “The First Billion is the Hardest”:

Proceeds of the book sales will be donated to two important charities — the “Warrior and Family Support Center,” a project of the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and the Fisher House, a program that supports injured military service personnel and their families in unique settings nationwide.

  36. dnd

    BTW Shelia,
If you want to vote for ol’ Boone as Time’s Person of the Year, go to:,28804,1857576_1857573_1857557,00.html

  37. chefsheila

I think that would be a great thread. just been trying to forage through to figure one out myself.

And thanks. I think he should be in the running as Person of the year.

  38. chefsheila

Of course, Obama is gong to be. 😉

  39. chefsheila

I think I have detected that you signed up and got the edit tool.

  40. dnd

Yeah Obama has almost a half million votes.

  41. dnd

    edit tool? Huh?

Hey Cbob was on trail Mix today!

  44. dog's eye view

What a day. “Anon” unmasked himself as the greatly missed CBob.

And Sheila getting her due for political forecasting.

Excellent, excellent day. So glad to learn we weren’t teased about CBob, and he really did recover.

  45. dnd

What a day. The Dow closed at 7552. Almost cut in half this year.

Glad to hear CBob is still kickin’

  46. chefsheila

Dnd, Brian and I are betting that its going to hit 7000 before it bottoms. I say christmas.

  47. dnd

Sounds like a good call. If we’re truly in a deflationary period, retail numbers for the holiday season are gonna be bad. Really bad. Really, really bad. Things could be better if the auto bailout gets signed next month.

My prediction is that things will start to improve on Jan. 20. Slowly.

  48. chefsheila

My prediction is, the building blocks should be in place on January 20th or we’re sunk.

  49. horsedooty

I think the bottom may be closer to 7200 than below 7000. But just a guess.

  50. chefsheila

    Well remember your bets 😉

  51. chefsheila

    How’s your leg Doots?

  52. dnd

Obama needs to name a Sec of Treasury, and an economic team, get them moved to DC ASAP, and work with the current administration. Build a little confidence in the markets.

  53. horsedooty

back from the Doctor today and he said the the incision looks great. Removed the stitches and told me I still needed to stay off the right foot as much as possible. no bandage now and can shower at will without a bag over my foot. only need to wear the boot when up moving about. still got about 6 weeks to go. thanks for asking.

  54. Evening folks, good news on the doctors report doots.

  55. Multiple news outlets have reported that Hillary has not made up her mind whether to take the gig, and the source confirms this.

    This is getting tedious.

  56. First off I’d like to congratulate Sheila for winning bragging rights. For a while there I thought I might win, but Sheila was a tad bit smarter than I was.

I believe that some time back I stated that the DOW would probably bottom out between 7200 and 7000, though now I’m beginning to think it may even go lower.

If the big 3 auto makers go under we will fall into a full blown depression and we all know who to blame for it. Bush and the Fascist Republican Nazi’s as they continue to plunder our Country.

I hope I’m wrong and I’m still worried that Bush will declare Martial Law before January 20, 2009 when Obama will be sworn in as America {Our Country} as next President. Only time will tell.

    Take care all and…

    God Bless.

  57. dog's eye view

Good morning all. Anyone out there?

  58. horsedooty

    I am here. Good Morning.

  59. dog's eye view

Doots: hello there. Good to hear you’re recovering well. Getting excited about your road trip?

  60. chefsheila

Morning everyone. Pausing to inject some liquid caffine……

  61. dnd

Morning all. Sounds like Hillary is in at State.

  62. chefsheila

Yes, I was just about to give you guys a Politico Piece.

But Anrea Mitchel broke the confirmation. Apparently she spent half the night getting her sources straight The craziness was wearing her in exclusive 🙂

  63. Nannymm

Good morning everyone! Going to throw some wood on the fire. It’s 12 degrees here.

Slowly but surely, the Minnesota recount is whittling away at Norm Coleman’s lead. With 46% of the ballots now recounted, Coleman’s initial certified lead of 215 has fallen to 136. There’s no real reason why the rate of change should remain at the same pace through the remaining 54% of the ballots. But the rate over the first couple days has them on track for something pretty close to a tie.

Remember too that there a few hundred disputed ballots that will be reviewed in December. So, there’s reason for some cautious optimism if you’re a Franken supporter. But this is still in ‘who knows’ territory.

Hillary Still Owes $5.4 Million To Mark Penn

The Associated Press reports that Hillary Clinton is still carrying a debt of $5.4 million to Mark Penn, out of roughly $7.5 million in total obligations. If Hillary were to become Secretary of State, FEC regulations would bar her from personally working to raise money to pay off those debts, though she could appoint an agent to raise money on her behalf and she would have some limited ability to appear at a fundraiser and thank donors.

  66. chefsheila

    Morning Anon-p

    Sorry to have missed you.

Don’t say that!!! 7000 is all the further I want to go. Mini Depression is all I want to even contemplate right now

I’ll tell ya too. I am not trusting Bush either. Things are not going well. I hope your wrong.

Did you guys know that None of the G20 shook the guy’s hand?

  67. dog's eye view

My mom says just wait until Bush is out of office, and then everyone will admit it’s a depression (or close to it).

She is well set, but can you imagine how frightened many elderly must be? Many watch an inordinate amount of TV/cable news — they don’t interact as much or get out as often — and they’re seeing cable seize the economic problems as avidly as a previous year’s missing blonde.

They remember the Depression — strong personal reactions (met a lady who cannot eat tomatoes, since that was her family’s hunger food).

They watch the financial institutions stumble and cease to exist.

They realize they’re being spun, but where is the truth? Or the bottom of the market?

They love their grandchildren, and regret the hard world they’re inheriting.

Hey Brian. The pups wearing sweaters outside yet?

  70. chefsheila

Well, Brian is injecting coffee like me. 😉

  71. chefsheila

    Well Dog,

I wish President elect Obama didn’t have to have opportunity from this at all. However, its too true.

  72. chefsheila

Listening to NBC’s Detroit anchor talking the truth.. There is a Meltdown happening to everyone.

I can’t even offload my condo for song. Oakland county, which “Was” the forth richest county in the nation is in melt down.

The unemployment rate is 9.2 there. Remember I said that there was no more unemployment insurance for the state?

Michigan is on the verge of Depression. So the Hill and the Big Three have got to come to some decision. A plan….something.
