Morning people. Sheila has a migriane..

Spoken just like a recovering smoker…..very hard to say “I quit” until you get a few years down the road.

  2. chefsheila

Dnd and all…..is that today all ready? my how time flies.

  3. Nannymm

I just had my second anniversary, Sheila. I quit December 4, 2008.

  4. I think I have a case of pseudomembranous colitis, I’m getting tired of this bullshit! Thanks for the pearl harbor reminder dnd, and reminding us how a real leader acts in a time of national crisis!

  5. Nannymm

    oops! I mean 2006.

  6. Nannymm

C-diff is a bitch, Brian. Are you on alot of antibiotics?

  7. I just came off a round of Clindamycin that the dentist put me on, which I have since learned should not be given to people with crohns and is the main culprit in C-diff.

  8. chefsheila

Hey! Nanny, I quit in 2005…..it was totally tuff and I’ve been quitting for years, but this time I think I’ve licked it…..but…..there are times where it becomes a danger of starting again…..have to be vigilant always

  9. chefsheila

Well, Gregory is the guy now. I wonder how long it will take him to develop a following. On average it has taken at least a year and sometimes 3.

  10. chefsheila

Time for “This Week” for me.

  11. Nannymm

You have that right! I would not be happy with that dentist if I were you. Have you called your doctor? Flagyl or Vancomycin are the drugs most effective for C-diff. The sooner you get a firm diagnosis and start treatment, the better.

  12. dnd

Geez Brian, you just can’t get a break. Take care of yourself.

  13. Nannymm

Sheila, I haven’t toughed a cig since the day I decided to quit. I figure I’m a nicotine addict and always will be. Thus, I can’t even have a drag of one or I could be hooked again. So I take it one day at a time, But I have to say, I really have no desire to smoke anymore.

Obama Says Economy Will Worsen Before Recovery Begins (Update2)

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601068&sid=aM3g6EwKnf5U&refer=home

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) — President-elect Barack Obama said the economic crisis will worsen before a recovery takes hold, and the government must act swiftly to stimulate job creation.

“Things are going to get worse before they get better,” Obama said in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” program broadcast today.

Obama, who takes office Jan. 20, said his advisers are still working to determine the size of the economic stimulus package needed to pull the country out of the longest recession since 1982. “But it is going to be substantial,” he said, without giving an estimate.

While calling the federal budget deficit he will inherit “enormous,” Obama said economic recovery is more important, “and that means that we can’t worry, short term, about the budget deficit.”

  15. Nannymm

dnd, I was so concerned about Brian that I forgot to tell you that I’m so glad you posted that video. We need good leadership now more than ever. FDR’s response to Pearl Harbor is an excellent reminder of what that kind of leadership can do for this country. So thanks for the reminder.

  16. chefsheila

Nanny, Me neither……..except the other day, when I having a hard moment of stress and the “Feeling” came over me. I voiced it to a friend and would not have had one. But there was no denying that the desire kind of snuck up on me.

    Surprising.

  17. Nannymm

Well, time for me to start making meatballs. It’s lasagna today with meatballs and sausage on the side. Have fun!

  18. chefsheila

I just have to voice this. Condi Rice is Moot to me. I’m having a hard time believing anything she says.

  19. Nannymm

I have a secret weapon for times like that. When I quit, Canyon wrote an essay about how proud he was of me for quitting. So on those occasions when I had an “urge” I re-read his essay and that did it for me. It reminded me why I quit in the first place. I also promised him I’d never start again. So, NO WAY will I break that promise.

  20. horsedooty

WRT smoking. I quit in 96. Used the “one step at a time” patches. I refuse to smoke anything cigars pipe or pot. Certainly no crack. I probably was temped a bit for about 2 years. Just out of the blue, I would think, “Damn, a cigarette would be good now.” Just out of the blue no signs or anything. Must be some sort of imprinting in the brain. my immediate response to that was, “WTF, are you crazy? You can’t have that now or ever.” After 12 years the only time I really think about it is like now. Hang in there it does get better.

  21. chefsheila

    Thanks Doots.

No denying recovering is one step at a time and President Obama is going to have one hard time for the next few years.

Takes a very strong person to be successful under these circumstances.

  22. Well I can’t take Flagyl, I’ve had some neuropophy (spell check) issues with it in the past, number finger tips. I’d rather not take Vancomycin either as it can lead to hearing loss. I think my case is pretty mild and I’m going to see if I can clear it up with probiotics as I’m not running fever. I have a cousin with sever MS, she’s been dealing with c-diff for seven months now, I’m hoping I won’t go down that road!

  23. going to go see Milk this afternoon, I hear it’s a real tear jerker and Sean Penn does an amazing job!

  24. chefsheila

Have fun. I’m going to take meds and hide my head to see if I can rangle it into submission.

  25. Just got off the phone with one my clients who’s a big shot GI he said it was fine to see if this resolves it’s self, sounds like a mild case!

  26. dog's eye view

sending wishes for improved health for Brian and Sheila and anyone else suffering, and a big “You did it!” to those who have kicked smoking. That has got to be one of the hardest habits to break, ever.

  27. dnd

Frank Rich has a column for those who are a bit to giddy right now:

“IN 1992, David Halberstam wrote a new introduction for the 20th-anniversary edition of “The Best and the Brightest,” his classic history of the hubristic J.F.K. team that would ultimately mire America in Vietnam. He noted that the book’s title had entered the language, but not quite as he had hoped. “It is often misused,” he wrote, “failing to carry the tone or irony that the original intended.””

  28. Congrats to Sheila on her pic of Shinseki.

  29. dnd

Um, that should be “too giddy”, not “to giddy” 🙂

  30. dog's eye view

got beaten to posting the Frank Rich column. It’s a much better treatment than yesterday’s “Look out — the smart people are coming” article in the WaPost.

  31. dog bobble dog

Note that wordpress can tell if you post from the laptop (green quilt design) or desktop PC (like that pink, up above).

    let’s try something here ….

  32. dog bobble dog

yup, WordPress went by the computer used. Something like that might have helped enormously on the other blog that must not be named.

  33. dog's eye view

Brian: noticed that I got a pink design from posting from my other computer, which I rarely use, even though it’s registered with the same user name BUT it’s registered with the second of two email addresses I use. (Laptop is registered with the mac address.)

Maybe I’m registered twice, or maybe wordpress notes which IP address or computer you communicate from.

  34. dog's eye view

And congrats to Obama for his pick of Shinseki. Not to mention Shinseki himself.

And how cool to appoint an American general of Japanese ancestry to your cabinet, in a defense related capacity, and have the news heavily reported on December 7.

Shinseki was born in Hawaii, then a territory, on the island of Kauai on November 28, 1942.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Shinseki

  35. dog's eye view

God help GORDO if Shinseki ever runs for president.

  36. chefsheila

More important for me. Shinseki is one of those “Git Er Done” guys. He’ll watch out and fight for all of us.

    He’ll tell the truth.

  37. chefsheila

Thanks Brian. Nothing to it. just sheer desparation and a wishing for some one that will actually have influence to take care of our injured troops.

  38. chefsheila

    Funny Dog!

  39. dnd

    Shinseki the cable guy? GET-R-DONE!

We need someone at VA that can tell off-color jokes, though I’m guessing we have that at many of the high level cabinet picks 😉

  40. Well I’m off to the movies, keep your fingers crossed for me that I can sit through it without a mad dash to the john!

  41. chefsheila

    Good luck Brian.

Dnd, Believe me, Shinseki has the humor of a Soldier. just not in public 😉

  42. Nannymm

It’s also a bit of justice for Shinseki that Obama chose him and made a point of saying that Shinseki would always fight for the troops. After the way he was treated by the Bushies, it was nice to see him lauded. He deserves it.

  43. chefsheila

    …..Cautious relief…..pain ebbing. Eating food…. ;0)

Another advantage to having Shinseki at VA. the closer you are to the personal needs of troops, the better to advise the President of the real state of the troops.

  44. Nannymm

I’m glad the pain is easing, Sheila. I used to have migraines and I know how debilitating they can be.

  45. Milk is an outstanding film!

  46. NBC News officially announced on Sunday morning that David Gregory, its longtime correspondent, would become the permanent moderator of “Meet the Press,” the network’s Sunday political discussion program. It had been expected that Mr. Gregory would replace Tim Russert, who died of a heart attack in June.

  47. dog's eye view

Good (chilly) morning. Hope all are warm, safe, happy and migraine and other ailment-free.

Yeah, think I’ll see “Milk” this week. Suspect Brian’s a discerning audience. It’s gotten good word of mouth from everyone I know.

And it’s a Gus van Sant movie. He’s one of my favorites. Always has something interesting to say. (Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho. Hadn’t realized he directed Good Will Hunting.)

  48. Nannymm

Good morning, dog’s eye. It’s minus 18 here. BRRRR!!!!!
And I had to go out already. It’s so cold out there, it’s hard to breathe. Thought my lungs were going to freeze up.

  49. dog's eye view

Hi nanny. You are a brave soul to live in upstate New York, picturesque as it is.

Silly question, but do many people freeze to death up in those parts each year?

I am wondering if we are going to see more house fires this year, since so many cannot afford a safer form of heat. (Christmas — with its flammable trees and faulty electrical cords — ups the fire risk.)

I wonder if we might see more deaths by CO2 poisoning too, from misused or damaged space heaters and outdoor generators being used in an enclosed space.

What a cheerful start to the morning thread!

  50. chefsheila

    morning gang

Up and kicking. Drinking the best cuppa I’ve had in 24 hours and ready for the day!

  51. chefsheila

Nanny, its 55 here. I’m glad I’m not where you are. The last year I was in the Hudson Valley, I endured minus 35……..!@#$% it was too hard for words. That was the year I finally found the true meaning of ear muffs and a scarf. oh! and my glasses served a great purpose too.

  52. chefsheila

Did anyone see GW’s portrait? I thought it looked powerless and small. Seriously, I don’t kno why the artist chose such high angle……badly done for the Bushes.

    http://www.mlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2008/12/president_george_w_bush_may_be.html

  53. Nannymm

I had the same reaction to that portrait, Sheila. But, I thought it looked just like him, the real him…..a small man even more diminished by his failure.

Ear muffs, scarfs, hats, down mittens, sheepskin lined Ugg boots, and LOTS of layers. That’s how I survive winter in the North Country. It’s a challenge just to get dressed to go out. LOL

  54. chefsheila

Well….here you go. his so called run for Senate sounded a little risky….

    Matthews staying at MSNBC?

Chris Matthews is expected to sign a long-term contract to remain as host of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” according to Politico’s Mike Allen.

On Wednesday, I reported that Matthews was negotiating with MSNBC, although the network and Matthews’ agent declined to comment.

Sources told Politico that it was unclear whether the talks had to do with reupping at the network or dealing with a possible Senate run. Either way, the talks were coming early, since Matthews’ contract isn’t up until June 2009.

While political operatives considered Matthews more likely to leave MSNBC, I heard skepticism from network sources, with some feeling that the Senate talk was a way of increasing his worth. It’s widely believed inside the network that Matthews will get a pay cut from his $5 million annual take.

“There’s no cost to it, and helps him in [contract] negotiations,” one network colleague told Politico last week. This source, who’d spoken to Matthews about running, considered the chances “slim” that he actually would.

    By Michael Calderone 09:27 AM

  55. Nannymm

That doesn’t surprise me. He probably would have had a hard time winning that Senate seat.

  56. chefsheila

    lol Nanny!

I picture you walking like the little brother in “A Christmas Story”

  57. dnd

I think W’s portrait would have been better if it showed him smirking 😉

  58. chefsheila

His portrait is almost as bad as that “MAD” characature of him.

ADS SUBTRACTING MASSIVE JOB CUTS SEEN ACROSS MADISON AVENUE

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/12082008/business/ads_subtracting_143211.htm

After trimming jobs throughout the year, Madison Avenue is bracing for even bigger layoffs in 2009.

Ad executives and recruiters expect agencies, which have been cutting in dribs and drabs, to hand out a flurry of pink slips early next year as the ad downturn worsens.

The talk in industry circles is that the major agency holding companies – Interpublic, Omnicom and WPP – are planning deeper cuts to ring in the New Year.
