What’s Taking So Long? dnd

Daaaad, are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Our contemporary society can be characterized by the need for instant gratification. You see it in all aspects of our lives. Now everybody is wondering why we haven’t recovered from this recession yet.

Some are blaming Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who as I write this has been in office all of about six weeks. They say he’s not a good public communicator. Hello? Can anyone name the last Treasury Secretary who was a good public communicator? Henry Paulson? Nope. John Snow? Nope. Paul O’Neill? Nope. Lawrence Summers? Yep, though some didn’t care for what he had to say. Robert Rubin? Yep, though he’s in the penalty box now for his involvement with Citigroup. Lloyd Bentsen? Yep, just ask Dan Quayle. Nicholas Brady? Who?

Ok, I’ll stop now. My point is that competence of the Treasury Secretary has little to do with being a charismatic public speaker. It’s competence to:

“Serve the American people and strengthen national security by managing the U.S. Government’s finances effectively, promoting economic growth and stability, and ensuring the safety, soundness, and security of the U.S. and international financial systems.”

The above is their mission statement. See: http://www.ustreas.gov/education/duties/

We are not going to get out of this economic mess any time soon. It will take time, so no whining. Get use to it. The sooner we all accept this, roll up our sleeves and get to work, the sooner we will get through this.

  2. dnd patience has never been the strong suit of the American People, especially these day. I think that is part of the reason why the admin is working overtime to show just what is being done.

this is too funny, bookended against Burrito’s comment on CNBC exposure from last thread:

    unlikely_burrito, on March 6th, 2009 at 11:20 am Said:

    Hi Everyone.
I am doing things around the house with CNBC on in the background, these people are coming unglued. Totally out of control, name calling …..The 24/7 screaming opinions regarding the markets, and the White House and the past and the present, numbers spewing , percentages up and down…. is giving me a headache.

Perspective is good. Although maybe it doesn’t attract eyeballs to cable news TV screens.

I swear Larry Kudlow is going to have a heart attack
    Timely post dnd!

Most of the reports I have heard, say that unemployment will get worse….(so no one should be shocked, but they are) and they are predicting a peek at a turn around by year’s end. If those comments are realized….I ‘d say that would be a pretty fast recovery.

Are we there yet? Got to love the Simpsons.

Brian, that Michael Moore piece is great.

dog, thanks for bringing Dame Burrito’s post about CNBC into the current thread. It reminds me of something that happened several years back. I was sitting in an airport bar watching “Kudlow and Cramer.” A business guy sitting next to me said to me: “those guys are just entertainers.”

It got me to thinking: if they’re so smart, and by they I mean all the yakkers on the cable financial networks, why are they wasting their time on tv when the could be making tons of money in the market or running their own business?

Epilogue: Having said that, Jim Cramer made a ton as a hedge fund manager. He gives all his current salary to charity. He manages a charitable fund, and doesn’t charge them a nickle. But his “Mad Money” show is strictly entertainment. He has made a number of huge blunders on that show.

  7. “I swear Larry Kudlow is going to have a heart attack”

    We can only hope!

  8. Thanks for the Krugman link Bev.

You missed the big story of the day:

“Malia and Sasha Obama don’t have that puppy yet, but their parents found another way to keep them entertained at the White House: a killer swing set.”

Rumor has it that the First Lady tried it out with her girls.

  12. 🙂

Yes I saw their new neato cool swing set on TV yesterday!

  13. dnd

My guess is that big ticket donors will no longer want to spend the night in the Lincoln bedroom and opt for playing on the swing set with Sasha and Malia.

  14. Wherever they allow smoking that’s where you’ll find me, and maybe the president too!

  15. dnd

I’d say Limbaugh should be ashamed of himself, but it’s pretty clear he has no shame.

Stephanie Miller jokingly asked Larry King if Limbaugh should be executed for treason, since he wants Obama, and by extension, America, to fail.

I don’t believe in capital punishment, but I might be able to make an exception in this case 😉

Good Morning Friends, I can’t sleep…lol Its 5:56am….and you know? Not so bad, I guess.

Great Post dnd. I’m sorry I could just sit down yesterday and read. You know Fridays.

Nanny and UB, I hope your days are balmy. Its sure looks like some are going to get some great weather.

morning all. Springtime here in metro DC. Birds singing outside and it’s warm enough for coffee on the deck.

Tonight we lose an hour (save for any Hoosier lurkers) as we turn back clocks for daylight savings time.

  18. chefsheila

I hate losing an hour… but I sure love gaining light at night.

    Ok One more mindless piece,

Rachell Maddow was on the “View”. Great Interview. Really Engaging!

  22. There seems to be a technical glitch in this weeks weekly address from whitehouse.gov, the only way I could play was to download and listen to the audio, but there was no video, therefore I won’t be changing the thread today.

  23. dnd

Rachel Maddow is the poster child on how disagree agreeably. We could use a lot more of that.

  24. dnd

The video works for me. Maybe John Boehner was trying to do a DoS attack 😉

    How cool is this?

“Kepler’s mission: to peer closely at a patch of space for at least three-and-a-half years, looking for rocky planets similar our own. The spacecraft will target an area rich with stars like our sun, watching for a slight dimming in the starlight as planets slip through the space between.”

    “Maybe I need a reboot.”

    Not gonna go there… 😉

  27. Just tried it again, and now it’s working, well I’ve posted the link, you can all go watch it, I’m feeling lazy, deal with it, even blog masters get to play hooky sometimes, hell some even play hooky for weeks on end.

you got spring fever, Brian? If NYC is like DC, can understand wanting to get out in the fresh air. After Monday’s heavy snowfall, yet.

  31. Nice day here too, but actually I’m feeling rather cranky despite the nice weather.

  32. dog's eye view

You? Cranky? We’ll mark our calendars. That’s an unusual occurrence.
