Obama’s SCOTUS Nominee: Could Arlen Specter Have Been More Useful as a Republican? Nannymm

When is comes to getting Obama’s SCOTUS nominee through the Senate,Arlen Specter may have been more useful to the Democrats had he stayed in the Republican minority. According to Sam Stein, “on judicial appointments because breaking (the equivalent of) a filibuster in the Senate Judiciary Committee requires the consent of at least one member of the minority. Before today, Specter was likely to be that one Republican. Now what?”

Judiciary Committee’s rules for the 111th Congress clearly shows, a member of the minority party does have to cast a vote in favor of a nominee in order to end committee debate over that nominee.

Looking at the list of Judiciary Committee Members leaves me wondering who, if anyone, may be the lone Republican to vote for an Obama nominee. Chuck Grassley? Orin Hatch? They seem like the only possibilities to me. So, get ready. Obama and we may have a fight on our hands.

    Good morning!

  2. I predict Orin Hatch, he fancies himself a statesman.

good post Nanny, I am gonna have to think about your post for a bit before I comment.

Interesting Nannymm. Orin Hatch was talkin’ smack on This Week yesterday.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/03/orrin-hatch-obama-speakin_n_195309.html

Hatch was parroting the GOP talking points that “empathy” was code for an activist judge. I don’t know if he was saying that for political reasons, really thinks that, or is just pissed because he wants to be on the SCOTUS and knows he has no chance.

My guess is that Obama will do his “diplomacy thing” and ask Hatch for his picks. Hatch will do his “statesman thing” and vote for whoever Obama picks, even though he opposes that pick.

  5. Nice catch Nanny! Committee rules are quite complex and arcane leaving only the “parlimentarians” to figure them all out. For instance, how was it possible for Senator Burr to hold up with just his say so the nomination of Ms. Duckworth to the Veterans’ Administration? By the way, where’s your avatar? No more flying kites?

Here’s an interesting article about Sonia Sotomayor.

Isn’t this what you and I are always saying, Brian?

    Government is Good
“The outbreak of H1N1 influenza should remind Americans that the very basis of modern conservatism—the idea that “government is the problem”—is demonstrably false. When individuals and corporations are unable or unwilling to solve major problems, the only solution is government.”

  8. Off thread: Our infamous Sheriff Joe has decided to look for Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and anyone who doesn’t look like him who are sneezing might be here illegally. Yes, that’s right: Sheriff Arpaio believes that since the swine flu came from Mexico any Mexican-looking person in Phoenix might be an undocumented person and subject to being stopped, asked for papers and subject to arrest and deportation. Just for sneezing: A public health crime!

  9. “Isn’t this what you and I are always saying, Brian? ”

    Huh? you lost me.

    Read this, Brian”

eprof, Sheriff Joe is a bigot. How do the people of Maricopa County keep re-electing him?
    I just read this:
    http://www.mcso.org/include/pr_pdf/Swine%20Flu.pdf

    The man is an embarrassment.

  12. BevnTempe

Sheriff Joe is a publicity seeking bloodhound. He is always looking for radio, TV or newspaper publicity and is ridiculous. I really can’t understand why he keeps getting re-elected, along with his “partner in crime” Andrew Thomas, the Maricopa County Attorney. The two of them are the new Abbott and Costello. However, since Arizona is red, people love them. It’s another story if you have brown skin.

    eprof2,
Well, the Rockies have captured the cellar in the NLW. Great pitching duel yesterday against the Giants. No score until the 10th.

  14. Yeah, I saw that, dnd. Dodgers tonight, who are going for number 11 in a row. They may have already put too much space between all the rest of the NLW this early in the season.

    First umpiring assignment tomorrow evening.

  15. dnd

    eprof2,
Tracy Ringolsby thinks that the Giants have the potential to do what the Rockies did in 2007. That would be exciting, especially if they skunked the Dodgers.

  16. Bachmann strikes again!

  17. dnd

“She’s the gaffe-prone congresswoman who made waves last week for wondering aloud about the Democrats’ role in the swine-flu epidemic. But long before U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann became infamous for her outrageous public statements, she was just a gay-bashing, God-fearing pol from Minnesota who sometimes said and did things that caused even her fellow home-state public servants to call her assertions “psycho-talk.” From hiding in the bushes at a gay-rights rally to boasting about the marriageability of her 13-year-old daughter, Bachmann has the gift of gab that keeps on giving.”

  18. If she’s serious that “god sent her to law school”, I’m really going to have consider become a hard core atheist.

  19. dnd

There was a time when the Republicans had a “good cop/bad cop” game plan, but that’s not working anymore. The House Republican leadership surely must realize that bat-shit crazy people like Michelle Bachmann belong on AM talk radio and not in the House.

Oh, wait a minute, John Boehner is the House Republican leader.

    Never mind…

Quatro de Mayo. May the “forth be with you.”

Remember Tom Paxton the topical folksinger? He is nearly 70 now and still out there writing songs and seeing thru the right wing crazies. Here is a song that my friend Hoot is working up to play in his solo shows. This is for Brian.

    SARAH PALIN
    By Tom Paxton

    She was for the Bridge To Nowhere, then she wasn’t;
There are those who think truth matters, but she doesn’t.
Seeing Russia from her back porch
    Means she knows foreign relations,
    And it’s only left-wing media
    Who ask for explanations.
    Eastern liberals ask questions so obtuse;
They don’t have the sense to field-dress a moose.
But, if you’re buying Sarah Palin, let me tell ya,
That I have a Bridge To Nowhere I can sell ya.
