Memorial Day 2010

memorial_day_at_arlington_national_cemetery

General John A. Logan had risen to the rank of Union Army general and commander of volunteer forces during the Civil War. As head of the post-war veteran’s organization the Grand Army of the Republic, he issued General Orders No. 11, establishing May 30 as “Decoration Day” to honor the Civil War dead. This later became a national holiday called Memorial Day.

On Memorial Day we remember those who fought for our country, those who were injured and those who died in defense of our cause.  We all greatly honor their service, bravery and dedication to duty.  Perhaps the way we can best honor their memory is to ensure that no others, in service of their country, are sent into harms way unless absolutely necessary.

I went to Fort Logan National Cemetery to put some flowers my dad’s grave. It’s remarkable how many more graves there are in the 10 years since dad died. Most from WWII, but a lot from the Korean war, Vietnam and, of course, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Pretty somber day. Props to all the scouts and military personnel who put flags on every grave.

  2. Morning peeps,
“Perhaps the way we can best honor their memory is to ensure that no others, in service of their country, are sent into harms way unless absolutely necessary.”

    Amen brotha!

Happy Memorial Day. Thinking fond thoughts of our dads, (moms?) and others who served.

But many of the questions are also aimed at another, equally sensitive mission: deciding whether gay applicants should be denied admission under complex recent guidelines from the Vatican that do not explicitly bar all gay candidates but would exclude most of them, even some who are celibate.

Well that pretty much says it all doesn’t it?

I am heading into a Liz Cheney free zone tomorrow.

Will be off the grid for a few days in Yosemite; first visit there ever.

Already preparing to stash the food and near-food (toiletries) in a bear-proof locker.

Rewriting above headline “[Public] Wants Investigation of Cheney White House.”

    Fixed.

“I wonder if the Grand Old Party has taken a step back recently and gotten a good look at just how tarnished they have become? You’ve got one Governor shooting wolves out of helicopters and another using laser guided missiles to take out coyotes during his morning jog. You’ve got the Tea Party rooting for insurance companies instead of kids and the Right-To-Lifers shooting doctors at church. The GOP even has homophobes practicing homosexuality. And “drill, baby, drill” isn’t sounding too great for a battle cry these days, but by God they’re sticking to it. From where I sit, the entire Republican Party should head to OZ – looking for a brain, a heart and a pair of testicles.”

The 120th Fighter Squadron flew over my house this morning on their way to the Memorial Day ceremonies at the Bolder Boulder 10k race. You can hear them coming, you can hear them going, but you can’t see them. They fly too fast. Amazing.

  7. Steve King: Muslim Groups, Unions ‘Calling The Shots At The Justice Department’

“The ACLU, SEIU and the Muslim American Society are calling the shots at the Justice Department. The ‘draft complaint’ DOJ has prepared to challenge the Arizona law is a ‘cut & paste’ version of the class-action lawsuit the ACLU filed in United States District Court on May 17th.” […] No other conclusion could be reached unless Holder releases the Department’s ‘draft complaint.’ But when it becomes public, all of America will know what I know today. The ACLU and their radical affiliates are dictating the policy of the White House and the Department of Justice.”

Hope everyone is enjoying and honoring this holiday. I put the flag up.

My dad doesn’t have a grave….his ashes are on a dresser in my Mom’s house, inside some container that matches the decor.

He is in my thoughts nonetheless, as are all the Veterans.

    peace~

  13. “inside some container that matches the decor. ”

Well it’s important not to clash!

U.S. Believes Missile Attack Killed Al Qaeda’s Operational Leader in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON – The operational leader of Al Qaeda in
Afghanistan was killed in an American missile strike in
Pakistan’s tribal areas in the last two weeks, according to a
statement from the terrorist group issued late Monday that
    American officials believe is correct.

The militant leader, Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, an Egyptian, was a
top financial chief for Al Qaeda as well as one of the
group’s founders, and was considered by American intelligence
officials as terrorist organization’s No. 3 leader behind
Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, another
    Egyptian.

      Joan Walsh on This Week:

“We don’t need a president, apparently we need a daddy. There’s this great call for a daddy, especially among Liberals and I find it ridiculous. You’ve got Maureen Dowd today calling him Spock again, she loves calling him that; Arianna Huffington is calling him ‘nowhere man’ because he’s daring to see a concert honoring Paul McCartney, and I think it’s really it’s a stand-in for a sense of helplessness when we sit here…and there really was a pattern of negligence and there really was warning signs on that rig in the weeks and certainly months perhaps and that’s what we need to get to the bottom of, and I don’t care if he emotes, I don’t need a daddy, I had one, he was great.”

  19. Walsh should of have said “some liberals”.

  20. Well the summer humidity def arrived with the memorial day weekend, yuck!

  21. hmmmmm, the Gores are separating.

  22. nah, one of those fast moving violent storms, it’s already moving away.

Ok, now you know the newest fiasco in AZ – the Catholic church’s decision to excommunicate a nun because she was on the ethics committee that made a decision to abort an 11 week fetus to save the mother’s life at St. Joseph’s hosp. in Phx. It finally came out on “Today.”

The church is in public relations trouble – excom. a nun who is saving a life and hide the priests who molest children. Glad I gave it up years ago.

    • dnd

      Bev,
I didn’t see it, but seems to me if the mother would die, so would the 11 week fetus.

I hope Arizona (and other) Catholic’s light a candle for that nun. My guess is that the Episcopalians will welcome her with open arms.

“some liberals” is right….my take which is as uninformed as can be, is that “some liberal people” do not care for President Obama’s overall style. He is a think and find out as much as possible, and then weigh the issue then speak/act.

Society has placed itself into frenzy-mode of demanding a rapid response right when they want it, regarding some of the most complicated issues.

    Instant Obamification.

Vision of toddlers screaming on the floor comes to mind.

  26. Bev that’s a pretty disgusting story, you seriously have to wonder what goes on inside some people’s heads and hearts.

  27. Kathy

    Hi All-
My mother in law is 81, and is one of those “some liberals” who do not like Obama. She voted for him and loved Hillary, and loves Bill still a lot more. She started complaining to me that Carville is right “he needs to do something”- and added that “he should have ” made the health care lowered to those 55 years old….She reluctantly agreed she liked his supreme court picks- “but that was just replacing liberals with liberals”.

I don;t spend much time with her anymore refuting this stuff, and after the conversation, I did say a bit of ” CLinton did not pass any heath reform- Obama did- but stopped myself. I have to say that I really found myself considering what exactly did Clinton achieve compared to Obama’s record? (Guess DADT is in my mind lately…)

  28. Hey Kathy, long time no see. How you been?

  29. tea baggers to the left of me, tea baggers to the right of me, it’s all the same bullshit, same coin, different sides.

  30. You left DOMA off the list kathy!

  31. Kathy

    Yes DOMA too Brian-

I am too busy in my second year of being my local school board chair, my regular life, kids. I look forward to next March when my fifth and last year of school board ends- important work but someone else needs to step up to the plate.

We have a big election in NH- Gregg is leaving the senate and my congressman Paul Hodes is running- the R will probably be Kelly Ayotte our former AG

I will try to post more often-

    • dnd

      Kathy,
School board chair is way important. Glad to hear from you and looking forward to more when you aren’t so busy.

  32. Kathy

By the way, I generally liked Clinton, but when I start to think of the challenges Obama faces due to the teabaggers as well as the pile o crap left him by the previous administration, I feel he really needs people to speak up for him. So then when I start to think of the Clinton terms, incl. NAFTA, I really step back to compare the achievements of each.

  33. The funny thing is Kathy none of this is actually about Clinton, it’s more about the people who have put the Clintons up on a pedestal, especially those of the left. Neither Hillary or Bill ever claimed to be liberals and both have spent a great deal of political capitol running away from the label. So where this unfounded adoration for the Clintons comes from by some from the left is just beyond me, I don’t get it at all.

  34. BTW kathy how you feeling? If I recall right you were dealing with some surgery issues last time we saw you .

  35. TempeBev

I have a question about the oil situation. If the gov. takes over as so many suggest, does that remove the financial responsibility of BP? Can they claim they are no longer in charge hence no longer financially responsible?

Also why haven’t tank ships been brought into the gulf to suck up the surface oil?

    • dnd

      Bev,
They used supertankers to suck up the oil during the Persian Gulf oil spill 20 years ago. It’s my understanding the reason they aren’t using it in the BP oil spill is because the Persian Gulf oil (Arabian Heavy and Arabian Medium) is more dense and viscous than what BP is drilling in the Gulf of Mexico (Light Louisiana Sweet), which makes it more amenable to the supertanker technique.

  36. Bev I don’t know the answer to either of your question, but I am under the impression (maybe incorrectly) that there are a lot of ships out there sucking up the oil.

  37. tonyb

Brian, what a laugh you gave me!! You don’t get it and you never will! Oh,Obama embraced liberalism when he was running in the Dem primary and that’s about it!! Obama a liberal, what BS..As far as where my unfounded admiration for the Clintons comes from, its none of your goddamn concern, just keep kissing this President’s ass, never holding his feet to the fire so we can get more watered down legislation…Barack Obama, savior, only in your mind!!!

  38. Dearest Tony,
I never claimed Obama was a liberal.
