Sargent Shriver 1915-2011

Sargent Shriver was know for many things, but chief among his accomplishments was as the driving force and the first director of the Peace Corps.   Everyone I know who served in the Peace Corps said that they got more out of it than those they helped.  Either way, it has been a win-win program for the United States.  Thank you Ambassador Shriver.

Another member of the Kennedy family older generation is gone.
The “sandwich generation” is now becoming the older generation as I have become. It’s sounds stupid, but even when you’re 50+ you realize you’re an orphan when both of your parents have died. It’s sad and scary because you realize you’re part of the older generation and you become very aware of your own mortality.

Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut Will Not Seek a Fourth Term

Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, the 2000 Democratic vice
presidential candidate who straddled the political divide
between Democrats and Republicans, will not see a fourth
term, according to an associate of the senator.

Shriver was a very good man.

KCET in LA had a documentary last night — “America’s Emerald Kings” re the Kennedy dynasty. Short video clip with Shriver at very end, on the very day he left this earth.

He stays relevant on his last day. Liked that.

Most interesting about the doc: long clip of 1960 candidate JFK addressing the Southern ministers re his Catholic faith, and interacting with them. Not soundbites.

All the emphasis on separation between church and state.

Something we have lost. The Moral Majority becomes the Tea Party, and in neither case will the Christian or Patriot fundamentalists respect their political opponents.

They’re afraid of Mooslims. And we are American infidels.

Internet connection at home is out. Verizon by tomorrow. Suspect house has LBJ or Nixon era phone wiring.

House Votes to Repeal Health Care Law

The House on Wednesday voted to repeal the Democrats’
landmark health care overhaul, in a largely symbolic step
that the new Republican majority said marked the beginning of
an all-out effort to dismantle President Obama’s signature
    domestic policy achievement.

Leaders of the Democratic-controlled Senate have said that
they will not act on the repeal measure, effectively
    scuttling it.

A House majority voted 245 to 189 to repeal the measure.
