Killed because she was a Jew ~ BrianInNYC

Wesleyan officials said police told them that Morgan targeted Wesleyan students and Jews in his journals. Justin-Jinich, of Timnath, Colo., came from a Jewish family, and her grandmother was a Holocaust survivor.

The entry also mentioned "seeing all of the beautiful and smart people at wes," adding, "I think it okay to kill Jews and go on killing spree at this school," the arrest affidavit quoted the composition book as saying.

here is my friend on youtube.com Stephen Bruton.

    Morning all.

Here’s the LATimes obit on Stephen Bruton.

Thought Doots might know this gentleman. Condolences all around.

He brought Ralph Stanley’s “O Death” to T Bone Burnett’s attention when Bruton was all of 14. Amazing song. Amazing guy. Sorry not to have known of him during his lifetime.

    http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-stephen-bruton11-2009may11,0,2975727.story

“Bruton, who had played with Kris Kristofferson for nearly 40 years and whose songs had been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Jimmy Buffett and numerous others, died at the home of a friend since childhood, musician-producer T Bone Burnett, with whom he’d recently completed work on a film, “Crazy Heart,” that Burnett is producing and for which he asked Bruton to produce the music.

“We finished it about two weeks ago,” Burnett said Saturday. “I’m deeply grateful he got to complete his work on the film. It meant a tremendous amount for him to get it finished. . . . In the last 72 hours things just started shutting down. . . . Up until yesterday I thought he was going to kick it. I think everybody thought he would kick it quickly because he was Stephen Bruton. We all thought he was invincible.”

NYTimes on yesterday’s Dick Cheney appearance on Face the Nation.

Powell was not necessarily “abandoning” the GOP. He was embracing sanity, not often at home in today’s GOP.

“Cheney’s Model Republican: More Limbaugh, Less Powell”

One gets kind of sad about Cheney’s disconnect from reality. Would be sadder if he had not cost so many their lives and our country so much turmoil and dissension and bad actions.

  4. dnd

Sorry to hear about your pal Doots.

“Cheney’s Model Republican: More Limbaugh, Less Powell”

Makes sense. Cheney used seven deferments to get out of military service in Vietnam. Limbaugh got out of the draft because of a cyst on his butt. Powell served multiple tours of duty in Vietnam.

  6. “Limbaugh got out of the draft because of a cyst on his butt. ”

Yes the army rarely takes people with active brain disorders.

Top 10 Racist Rush Limbaugh Quotes

    1. I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.

Okay Rush, slavery was not a good thing for the millions of African Americans who were enslaved, raped and beaten. The streets weren’t at all safe for African Americans. Slavery not a bad thing? Someone should put Rush on a plantation for him to see how great it is. Keep on fear and race mongering Rush, you might get to Goebels status.

    2. You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray [the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King]. We miss you, James. Godspeed.

Martin Luther King is a national hero, not a black hero. Everybody in the United States celebrates his birthday, children are taught to look up to him as a hero in school. He’s earned the respect and admiration of the world and you believe the man who killed him was a hero? This is beyond racist. This is evil, mean spirited, subhuman. Praising the assassin of one of our great American heroes is beyond the scope of regular racism.

    3. Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?

No but I’ve noticed that all racist bigots think like Rush Limbaugh. Comparing a respected black politician and minister to common criminals is Jim Crow racism. Maybe all black people look alike to him, but I’ve never seen a picture of a wanted criminal that looks like Jesse Jackson. A serial killer that looks like Rush Limbaugh on the other hand.

    John Wayne Gacy

    4. Right. So you go into Darfur and you go into South Africa, you get rid of the white government there. You put sanctions on them. You stand behind Nelson Mandela — who was bankrolled by communists for a time, had the support of certain communist leaders. You go to Ethiopia. You do the same thing.

The communist connection is an old way of dealing with black leaders. They used it on Martin Luther King, they’re using it on Barack Obama and Limbaugh used it on Nelson Mandela. By siding with the racist apartheid regime over a world-wide symbol of peace and freedom, Limbaugh has shown he’s a global racist.

    5. Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.

Limbaugh is once again fear mongering and race baiting by associating professional black athletes with criminals and gangmembers. He continues the fear mongering association of good, decent, hard working African Americans as criminals.

    6. The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies.

Now Limbaugh is saying that an organization with a storied tradition of representing the positive black people for change in their communities are criminals and rioters. An organization that has been represented by intelligent professional African Americans, that has played a part in the Civil Rights movement and continues to be an intelligent, concerned voice for the African American community is degraded to common criminals. There you go Rush. Keep racism alive!!!!

    7. They’re 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?

Decent human beings care Rush. Someone out of that 12% may just become President of the United States. Not caring about black people? Even George Bush wouldn’t admit to that.

    8. Take that bone out of your nose and call me back(to an African American female caller).

Okay Rush that’s classy. The old African bone in the nose stereotype. Wasn’t funny when the racist white school kids called the black kids that and it’s definitely not funny when a grown man with audience of millions of easily influenced dittoheads says it either.

    9. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve.

I wasn’t super offended by this, the whole black quarterback/coach thing has been going on for years in sports, but the quote was so offensive that Retired General Wesley Clarke said:

There can be no excuse for such statements. Mr. Limbaugh has the right to say whatever he wants, but ABC and ESPN have no obligation to sponsor such hateful and ignorant speech. Mr. Limbaugh should be fired immediately.

When a respected, retired general condemns the statement of a sportscaster, you know he’s gone too far.

    10. Limbaugh attacks on Obama. Limbaugh has called Obama a ‘halfrican American’ has said that Obama was not black but Arab because Kenya is an Arab region, even though Arabs are less than one percent of Kenya. Since mainstream America has become more accepting of African-Americans, Limbaugh has decided to play against its new racial fears, Arabs and Muslims. Despite the fact Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law school, Limbaugh has called him an ‘affirmative action candidate.’ Limbaugh even has repeatedly played a song on his radio show ‘Barack the Magic Negro’ using an antiquated Jim Crow era term for black a man who many Americans are supporting for president. Way to go Rush.

Cicadas are out in northern Virginia. This is not the usual 17-year crew (they last appeared in May 2004), but it seems 2009 will be a bumper year for cicadas.

Noticed a few empty shells attached to our front door frame 2 days ago. This morning, sighted at least 20-30 shells in one minute’s scan, some attached to blades of grass. The light rain last night washed many empty shells onto the sidewalks.

People eat these things, but I prefer my chocolate without.

    Anyone out there seeing cicadas?

Does not seem the WaPost has covered the story; nothing on local news yet either.

Maybe the Kessler folks knew you’d do a good job in service of your country, and thus no head’s up on the cyst. Maybe you did something to tick them off.

Paul Krugman’s column today: “Harry, Louise and Barack. Excerpts:

“Six major industry players — including America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), a descendant of the lobbying group that spawned Harry and Louise — have sent a letter to President Obama sketching out a plan to control health care costs. What’s more, the letter implicitly endorses much of what administration officials have been saying about health economics.

…. first things first: on the face of it, this is tremendously good news.

… [however] there’s every reason to be cynical about these players’ motives. Remember that what the rest of us call health care costs, they call income.

What’s presumably going on here is that key interest groups have realized that health care reform is going to happen no matter what they do, and that aligning themselves with the Party of No will just deny them a seat at the table. …

I would strongly urge the Obama administration to hang tough in the bargaining ahead. In particular, AHIP will surely try to use the good will created by its stance on cost control to kill an important part of health reform: giving Americans the choice of buying into a public insurance plan as an alternative to private insurers. The administration should not give in on this point.

But let me not be too negative. The fact that the medical-industrial complex is trying to shape health care reform rather than block it is a tremendously good omen. It looks as if America may finally get what every other advanced country already has: a system that guarantees essential health care to all its citizens.”

I wonder if the health insurance mess could be fixed by making not-for-profit health insurance companies a 501(c) type and federal tax exempt and allow people to buy health insurance from companies outside of their state.

Health insurance companies have huge staffs who’s tasks is to deny claims, to increase profitability. They also pay taxes on profits. Get rid of those cost centers and focus the savings on health care, and it seems that health care will improve, be more affordable, and drive the for-profit health insurers into a different mode.

Yesh. We have heard Canadian blogfriend Tylenol’s horror story of her experiences with the Canadian system.

    Not.

  24. nannymm

H, everyone! We’re back from the Canadian woods. Just starting to catch up on the posts from the past few days.
Johanna’s murder was yet another tragedy that should never have happened. Who the hell thinks it’s appropriate to teach young people to have such hatred for others? This needs to change NOW!

As for Rush, nice compilation, Doots. It just illustrates how hatred for others continues to be spread. While I am all for free speech, I do think that we need to find a way to silence the voices of hate. Perhaps the sponsors of Limbaugh and his ilk need to step up and put what is right ahead of the Almighty dollar.

  25. Well Ms. California just got slammed pretty good!

  26. dog I’ll bet whatever the number of people is who somehow have suffered to the UK or Canadian system pales in comparison to the numbers of people dieing in this country due to no insurance at all!

  27. Notice how the prez did a preemptive by bringing up “Harry and Louise” ?

  28. nannymm

Dog’s Eye, If I remember correctly, Tylenol was thrilled with the prompt care she received when she needed emergency surgery last year. She said she received excellent care and no cost due to her health care coverage in Canada.
I was speaking with some Canadians just this past weekend about their healthcare coverage. Not a one of them had any complaints. Among the Americans in our group were two MD’s and one other RN. Unlike our Canadian friends, we had a litany of complaints about our healthcare system.

  29. dog's eye view

Please note the “not” at end of comment on Canadian healthcare. Well remember Tylenol’s appreciation of her healthcare system.

I say bring it on! Many people die before their time or live much worse lives due to lack of affordable healthcare in this country.

And rationing — to some extent — will have to be a feature of a universal system. Particularly rationing of non-helpful and purely elective procedures.

I think it’s the “greatest good” aspect that bothers some people about universal healthcare and other types of perceived socialism. Some want to live in a “as long as I get mine first and always get what I want” society.

Chrome has an interesting interface and features, but it spawns a new process for each tab. Eats a lot of memory. Firefox does not.

Fire the General, keep the troops. It took Lincoln about a dozen generals before he finally found one that seemed to “get it.” US never did get it in Vietnam by changing generals. It’s the cause, and America’s empire building cause is the problem not the solution. No more troops, no more funds, and get out now while the gettin’ is good. When will we learn that we can’t overcome a thousand years of history by the bayonet. Even Secretary Gates understands that concept.

Two items on General McChrystal: He has been the commanding officer for Special Forces, including the “Black Ops Corp,” in charge of the infamous “Nama” compound where torture was used fairly often. See the McChrystal entry in Wikipedia, the NYTimes, and the Atlantic.

And, for Arizonans, and the Pat Tillman family in particular, the appointment of General McChrystal will scratch off the scabs of the now generally understood cover-up of friendly fire killing the ASU and Arizona Cardinals football player.
