He brought Ralph Stanley’s “O Death” to T Bone Burnett’s attention when Bruton was all of 14. Amazing song. Amazing guy. Sorry not to have known of him during his lifetime.

Cicadas are out in northern Virginia. This is not the usual 17-year crew (they last appeared in May 2004), but it seems 2009 will be a bumper year for cicadas.
Noticed a few empty shells attached to our front door frame 2 days ago. This morning, sighted at least 20-30 shells in one minute’s scan, some attached to blades of grass. The light rain last night washed many empty shells onto the sidewalks.
People eat these things, but I prefer my chocolate without.
Anyone out there seeing cicadas?

I wonder if the health insurance mess could be fixed by making not-for-profit health insurance companies a 501(c) type and federal tax exempt and allow people to buy health insurance from companies outside of their state.
Health insurance companies have huge staffs who’s tasks is to deny claims, to increase profitability. They also pay taxes on profits. Get rid of those cost centers and focus the savings on health care, and it seems that health care will improve, be more affordable, and drive the for-profit health insurers into a different mode.

Johanna’s murder was yet another tragedy that should never have happened. Who the hell thinks it’s appropriate to teach young people to have such hatred for others? This needs to change NOW!
As for Rush, nice compilation, Doots. It just illustrates how hatred for others continues to be spread. While I am all for free speech, I do think that we need to find a way to silence the voices of hate. Dog’s Eye, If I remember correctly, Tylenol was thrilled with the prompt care she received when she needed emergency surgery last year. She said she received excellent care and no cost due to her health care coverage in Canada.
I was speaking with some Canadians just this past weekend about their healthcare coverage. Not a one of them had any complaints. Among the Americans in our group were two MD’s and one other RN. Unlike our Canadian friends, we had a litany of complaints about our healthcare system.
Please note the “not” at end of comment on Canadian healthcare. Well remember Tylenol’s appreciation of her healthcare system.
I say bring it on! Many people die before their time or live much worse lives due to lack of affordable healthcare in this country.
And rationing — to some extent — will have to be a feature of a universal system. Particularly rationing of non-helpful and purely elective procedures.
I think it’s the “greatest good” aspect that bothers some people about universal healthcare and other types of perceived socialism. Some want to live in a “as long as I get mine first and always get what I want” society.

Obtained both without being financially devastated, as happens too much south of her border.

Chrome has an interesting interface and features, but it spawns a new process for each tab. Eats a lot of memory. Firefox does not.
Presumably they did this because if one tab crashes it won’t bring down the browser, which is the case with Firefox.
I don’t know dog, I’m not a big fan of chrome and use it rarely.

Firefox eats a lot of memory too. The 3.0 release claims they fixed a lot of memory leaks, but I’m not so sure. And 3.0.9 and 3.0.10 have both crashed on me.
If you don’t have a lot of tabs open in Chrome, it’s fine. Just stay away from IE.
