Harold E. Ford Jr. Decides Not to Run for New York Senate Seat

Under intense pressure from Democratic Party officials,
Harold E. Ford Jr., the former Tennessee congressman, has
decided not to challenge Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand in the
primary this fall, according to two people told of his plans.

He has told friends that, while he is convinced he could
prevail against Ms. Gillibrand, he feared the winner of the
primary would have little money and remain highly vulnerable
to a well-financed Republican challenger at a time when the
Democratic party controls the Senate by a slim majority.

  2. nannymm

I just read that, Brian. It’s great news!!

    OT, check your email.

  3. tonyb39

    Nanny
It sure is great news.I used to like Harold, but in listening to him,he’s a bit to slippery for me..Ha,he’s for gay marriage now,oh really….

  4. nannymm

    OT=off topic

  5. nannymm

Slippery..that’s one way of putting it, Tony. Personally, I just think he’s an opportunistic bull shitter.

  6. I didn’t get anything from you. Tony, Ford is a creep, big time. Talk about political whores!

  7. I wish Blanche Lincoln would announce she’s not going to run.

  8. nannymm

I sent it to BC, Brian.

  9. i didn’t get it, can you send it directly to me.

  10. got it, cute, you should post the link here so Tony and the lurkers will know what we are talking about!

  11. nannymm

    Here it is:

My grandson (age 13) forwarded this to me with instructions to pass it on to all my friends. What a kid! I’m so proud of him!!

    http://funnyjunk.com/funny_pictures/237307/the+american+mindset/

  12. tonyb39

    Nanny,
That’s great! Your Grandson did good.I’m forwarding it shortly, wait till Baz,my friend in Melbourne,AU see’s it,he will be on the Magic Jack with a laugh..

  13. tonyb39

    Brian,
I guess i liked Ford because of the way Corker and the Republican’s smeared him during his Senate run in Tenn.I really didn’t have a clue then how far right his positions were. Now he’s just a Shape Shifter,ha,to much “True Blood”.

  14. You liked him cause he was a Hillary supporter, come on, who do you think you’re kidding?

  15. Hey Tony, I see Craig is going to be on Fox. What took so long?

  16. tonyb39

    Brian,
Not kidding myself, maybe him being for Hillary was part of it,but i never paid much attention to him at all till he ran against Corker.I liked him, felt sorry for him.My family comes from Tenn.,i know what the environment for Dems is in that state.I didn’t realize then he was voting in such an anti-gay and anti-choice way, should have but didn’t..It was certainly astute of him to support Hillary though,ha,what did you used to write,oh ya,”ducks and covers”

  17. His voting record in Tenn was appalling, how he thinks he could come to NY and get elected is seriously beyond me.

  18. tonyb39

Yep,i know now.I heard him weeks ago on Morning Joe refer to NY as his home State,so fake..I said to myself Hillary at least went around the State, did the work, what have you done Harold!

  19. Well he did fly over Staten Island!

  20. nannymm

Harold Ford, Jr. says he’s an INDEPENDENT Democrat. Heaven help us! Haven’t we had enough with that other “independent” democrat, Joe LIEberman?

Why I’m Not Running for the Senate
“I am a Democrat. But I am an independent Democrat. I am not going to stop speaking out on behalf of policies that I think are right — regardless of ideology, party or political expediency. I plan to continue taking this message across our state and across our nation.”

  21. dooty

never heard of an Independent Democrat until recently. However comma, DINO seems to be the a much more accurate title.

  22. dooty

March 2, 1836 was the day that Texas declared it’s independence from Mexico.

    • dnd

March 2, 1927 was the day Babe Ruth became the highest paid player in baseball, earning $70,000/year. If he was playing now, he’d be making 2-3 times that per game…

  23. nannymm

I hope today is the day you all dump Rick Perry, Lee.

How was your trip to Alpine?

  24. Perry is going to win Nanny.

  25. dooty

unfortunately Nanny Brian is probably right. I was thinking or voting today in the Repub contest just to try my part to get Gov Good Hair Perry out of there.

  26. nannymm

    Interesting article:

    Why Republicans want gridlock
Groups in decline, such as the white working class that controls the GOP, tend to focus on blocking change
    http://www.salon.com/news/politics/republican_party/index.html?story=/opinion/feature/2010/03/01/gridlock

  27. dooty

    Nanny,

the trip was good. Weather was mostly good. It was very cold on Thurs morn but warmed up nice. The wind laid down most of the weekend. Sunday was funny weather wise. My hosts always have a Sunday breakfast for friends after the Gathering. I cooked bacon outdoors on an open fire and it was cool but ok. Later in the afternoon the clouds came in and you can see off in the valley it looked liked it was dust out there but it turned out to be snow. Then the wind started to howl and Monday morn when I left at 6:30 am it was really howling. Down in town, it was calm. Then I spent all day in either rain or snow coming home.

  28. nannymm

I fear that you are both right. I just don’t understand why the people of Texas continue to support him….

  29. nannymm

    WTF???????

Are Dems caving on health care?
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Obama is preparing a “much smaller” proposal. What does this mean for health reform?
    http://www.theweek.com/article/index/106949/Are_Dems_caving_on_health_care

  30. I’ll wait and see what he actually has to say tomorrow Nanny.

  31. nannymm

He’s still on his bipartisan, “kiss republican ass” quest. Enough already! Pass a damned DEMOCRATIC bill. Screwed the repugs!!!!
    http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/documents/2010/03/obama-writes-to-congress-on-health-care.php?page=1

  32. That’s not what I heard, I heard he plans on including a few of the repug’s ideas, it’s not a bad idea.

  33. nannymm

Read his letter. I posted the link.

  34. I read the letter, I don’t know what’s getting you so upset.

  35. nannymm

I would think he’d have gotten the repug message last week. They have absolutely NO intention of voting for ANY healthcare bill or any other Democratic bill, for that matter. Reaching out to them is a waste of time. Let’s just get this done and get it done now. Efforts to incorporate repug ideas at this late date just slow things down and could derail them. Remember last August? I said it back then; if we didn’t get the bill through before the recess, it would be a disaster. Well, it didn’t get through and we ended up with a giant mess. Now we’re going to slow it down again???? WTF for?????

  36. nannymm

I forgot to mention that Obama can cave to repugs and incorporate their ideas even though they will do everything in their power to derail this bill and every other bill he supports. Yet, he can’t give real support to a Democratic idea: THE PUBLIC OPTION!!! Please! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Obama talks a great game but when it comes down to it, he had no backbone.

  37. dog's eye view

I suspect the 4 ideas incorporated are appealing to the remaining sane Republican and independent voters, plus blue dogs and those hailing from more conservative areas, and could be used to say “look, I listened at the summit and am being inclusive.”

They deal with cost containment and fraud reduction. I thought Coburn’s idea on investigating fraud and gaming the system was a good one.

    From the letter:

    1. …. Senator Coburn had an interesting suggestion that we engage medical professionals to conduct random undercover investigations of health care providers that receive reimbursements from Medicare, Medicaid, and other Federal programs.

    2. My proposal also … authorizes funding to states for demonstrations of alternatives to resolving medical malpractice disputes, including health courts. … I am open to including an appropriation of $50 million in my proposal for additional grants.

    3. At the meeting, Senator Grassley raised a concern, shared by many Democrats, that Medicaid reimbursements to doctors are inadequate in many states … if Medicaid is expanded to cover more people, we should consider increasing doctor reimbursement … in a fiscally responsible manner.

    4. Senator Barrasso raised a suggestion that we expand Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). I know many Republicans believe that HSAs, when used in conjunction with high-deductible health plans, are a good vehicle to encourage more cost-consciousness in consumers’ use of health care services.

I think it’s Obama et al taking some of the wind out of GOP sails.

    http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/03/02/president-obama-follows-thursdays-bipartisan-meeting-health-reform-0

  38. dog's eye view

Nanny: I am disappointed he didn’t come out big for the public option at the outset, too — but would suspect we are headed that way within a few generations. It makes too much economic sense.

There’s been so much blowback on trying to get anything accomplished.

I think we ought to push for reform for economic security reasons. Clearly, altruism does not sell. Nor does looking out for one’s neighbors or the less fortunate, in the most “Christian” nation on earth.

  39. nannymm

I don’t think we can afford to wait a few generations, Dog’s Eye. IMO, if Obama was serious about cost containment, the public option would be at the top of his list of priorities. It would be far more beneficial than “medical professionals …. conduct[ing] random undercover investigations of health care providers that receive reimbursements from Medicare, Medicaid, and other Federal programs.”
As a medical professional, I can tell you that we are far to busy to do that. Furthermore, if anyone does do it, they will expect to be well paid. I suspect that there will be no money saved as a result, unless the “inspectors” have fraud quotas to meet. In that case, they will do what Medicaid inspectors used to do; they’ll cite Doctors for nonsense like x-rays that are too light or dark or physicians notes that aren’t “clear” enough. You know how that worked out? Most of the doctors I know quit the Medicaid program. Now that will really help the poor. NOT.
One final point. Good medical professionals are in the business of helping patients get well. They aren’t interested in working for insurance companies to deny care to patients. And they won’t be interested in working for the government to find fraud. That’s not what we went to school for.

  40. I think it’s in the left’s political advantage if the president looks like he’s being the rational one and the repugs are not. That’s what I see this is letter being about, nothing more. There is nothing in the four points he’s sited that in any way compromises what’s in the existing bill. By the repugs voting against the bill once the president has included some of their points just further reinforces that they are they party of NO.

  41. nannymm

I hope it works out that way, Brian. I really do. But I’m not convinced. You give the American public far more credit than I do. I think stupidity abounds among the general population. I just don’t think the Obama haters will change or that the independents pay close enough attention to get it. If they did, they would already see that the repugs’ only idea is to obstruct everything.

  42. dog's eye view

I think Obama was surgically removing some fig leaves. He’s already put the Republicans on notice he will proceed without them.

Americans DO want their healthcare system reformed. There are numerous points of agreement. Go with them, and continue to improve the program as it hits the real world.

PS: there are plenty of Medicare bilkers and too many not-good medical professionals out there. But maybe not as many as Coburn and others think. Would be good to find out. Sunshine and all.

“Tom Harkin’s Incoherent, Two-Faced Public Option Nonsense”

“Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) spent most of the year claiming he was a champion of the public option. Now that there is a possibility of getting a public option with a simple majority using reconciliation, Harkin has made clear that he will actively work to kill the public option, while tying himself in incoherent, illogical knots trying to justify his actions–while still trying to claim he supports the public option. Via The Hill:

“If we have a bill sent to us from the House that does not have the public option here, if we were to add it here, it would sink the whole bill.,” Harkin said during an interview on MSNBC, adding that he would not vote to revive the public option “if it meant that it would sink the whole healthcare reform bill.”

    Nanny and all,
Good comments.I agree with you Nanny, enough is enough, the Republican’s like Grace (the lady i work with) will never be for anything the Dems do…This kind of shit from Sen.Harkin is the very reason the Dems are going to lose their ass in Nov.Will the Dems fight for anything?

  44. I wonder if Bunning is planning on seeking re-election as the Tea Party candidate.

  45. nannymm

Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY), who has become a one-man filibuster of a bill to extend unemployment benefits, apparently placed a hold on all presidential nominees last week.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s office confirms to TPMDC that Bunning has placed the holds.

“It turns out that not only has he been blocking the unemployment insurance bill, he has also been blocking the confirmation of nominees since last week as well,” said Reid spokesman Jim Manley.

Two words (and not the two you’re thinking of in reference to Bunning): recess appointments.

Hutchison Concedes Texas G.O.P. Primary for Governor to Perry

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison Tuesday night conceded the Texas
Republican primary for governor to the incumbent, Rick Perry,
saying the party should unite behind the governor so he can

Representative Charles B. Rangel Says He Is Stepping Down Temporarily as House Ways and Means Committee Chairman

Caught in a swirl of ethics inquiries, Representative Charles
    B. Rangel said on Wednesday that he would temporarily step
aside as leader of the House Ways and Means Committee.

  54. dog's eye view

Waking up to find Rangel stepping aside from Ways and Means chairmanship “temporarily” — excellent. That’s a headache no one needed. Ethically challenged is ethically challenged.

It sounds like he was going to try to brazen it out until he learned he was losing some Democratic support.

    • dnd

If Rangel knowingly violated the rules, he should be rebuked. If there is proof of corruption because of those corporate sponsored trips, he should resign his house seat. But if not, I wonder how what he did was unethical compared to Bunning’s recent actions.

  55. dooty

my wife thinks Perry will be easier to defeat in the general than K would have been. I disagree. The Democrat is the last mayor of Houston and has had record percentages in his winning campaigns. I still think Perry is the next gov of Texas.

Obama to Call for Up-or-Down Vote on Health Bill

Saying that the issue of overhauling the health care system
had already been debated thoroughly, President Obama called
on Congress to bring the bill to a vote in the next few
    weeks.

  57. dooty

check this video out…pretty cool, if you ask me.

  58. dog's eye view

There is so much about Rangel, on so many fronts.

I don’t see much point in propping up seriously ethically challenged people, or saying “the other guy did it.”

It’s not like Harlem is going to send a Republican to Congress.

Bunning is literally demented. Would love to see the blowback on his actions hit John Cornyn and some of his other defenders on this action.

  59. nannymm

Dog, the point is, if Rangel didn’t violate ethics rules or commit illegal acts, he should remain in his position. It isn’t about who will replace him. It’s about fairness and right and wrong. If he’s guilty, he needs to resign; if he is not guilty, he should stay. So far we have a lot of allegations and one relatively minor infraction for which he was rebuked. I don’t think he should be pilloried until all the facts are out.

  60. nannymm

Alan Grayson is set to debate Michelle Bachman on Larry King. It’s on now.

  61. nannymm

OMG! Bachman just accused Obama of corruption. She claims he’s traded a federal judgeship for a congressman’s vote. According to her, Obama gave the brother of an unnamed congressman a federal judgeship in exchange for the congressman’s vote. That bitch is insane!!!!

  62. tonyb39

Bachman needs meds!! Anti psychotics are in order.

  64. “Bachman needs meds!! Anti psychotics are in order.”

Can’t you share some of yours?

  65. nannymm

Tony, I’m inclined to agree with Moore. I’m so disappointed and disgusted with Obama and the dems. They have no cajones.

  66. tonyb39

Oh,you so funny,Brian.I have some fine Australian Merlot, but i’m saving that for a hot guy!! Ha ha,now I’m the funny one…

  67. tonyb39

    Yep Nanny,
Moore is correct! The President and the Dem’s finally get it after a year that Republican’s want no part of healthcare reform. Now,if it only takes a 50 vote majority, why hasn’t the President put the Public Option back in his bill?We all know its the backroom deals with Pharma and Insurance.

  68. top of the morning peeps.

  69. nannymm

That’s my biggest objection to this, Tony. Since the repugs will not vote for HCR (or any other Democratic bill, for that matter) why don’t Obama and the Dems get rid off all the repug ideas in the bill and go with a real Democratic bill that would include a public option? It’s time to force the blue dogs to cooperate; Obama needs to find his inner LBJ and twist some arms.

    • dnd

      tony and nanny,
Cool your jets. The public option will be a reality. But the President can’t throw the Republican ideas out and here’s why:

One Republican idea will allow people to buy across state lines. This will allow people to buy into the Federal Employees Health Benefit plan. The available plans are specified by the government (currently the Office of Personnel and Management though likely to be moved to HHS) and periodically bid on by insurers. These are “administrative services only” plans where the risk pool is self insured and the winning bidders just do the paperwork for a small fee. This is a huge risk pool and will only get larger, meaning that premium costs will go down. Premium costs will go down for everybody as insurers will have to compete with the FEHB.

This is essentially a “public option” so calm down. Obama is playing chess while the Republicans are playing checkers. My guess is that Obama’s mother read Br’er Rabbit to him when he was a child.

  70. nannymm

Cool our jets? Excuse me, dnd, but NO FUCKING THANK YOU!

  71. nannymm

My guess is that Obama needs to grow a pair. And you ought no to tell me to calm down or I might have to tell you a thing or two.

  72. nannymm

My guess is that Obama needs to grow a pair. And you ought not to tell me to calm down or I might have to tell you a thing or two.

  73. nannymm

This isn’t about Hillary. This is about Obama and the Dem congress, dnd. They’re gutless!
Now since you have told me what to do three times today, I’m going to tell you what you can do. Go fuck yourself.

  74. Oh no he didn’t! LOL

    Thank god for pain meds!

  75. nannymm

    WTF is so funny, Brian?

  76. I’m not doing this nanny, I’m having too damn a hard time of it right now.

  77. nannymm

I’m not doing anything, Brian. Talk to your buddy dnd. Feel better. I’m out of here.

  78. tonyb39

Brian, keep those pain meds going, cause you’ll heal much faster, sorry for your troubles!

“Obama needs to find his inner LBJ and twist some arms.”
Nanny,I’m with you,let the arm twisting begin..We’ve been waiting patiently for over a year, its time.

    DND,
I sure hope your correct.I’m wary though, there’s a reason why many progressives and liberals are upset with this healthcare bill,ha and its not because their all Hillary supporters..A true Public Option should be put in,Dems have the majority lets do it.But instead we get more of this wussie behavior from Dems,enough..

  79. tonyb39

    http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/84969-howard-dean-health-bill-hangs-dem-incumbents-and-obama-out-to-dry-in-elections

“Howard Dean: Health bill hangs Dem incumbents and Obama out to dry in elections”

“Passing the healthcare proposals before Congress will “hang out to dry” every Democratic incumbent running for reelection this fall, Howard Dean said Thursday.

Dean, a physician by training who’s a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), said that Democrats in Congress — and President Barack Obama — would do themselves more harm than good by passing the current healthcare bill.”

  80. nannymm

Tony, Obama doesn’t care. All he wants to do is pass something, ANYTHING with the words “Healthcare Reform” in the title. He knows that if he doesn’t he’s lost most of the base and he’s toast. This is no longer about real reform. It’s pure politics and it stinks! Obama has screwed this up and we all will pay. Some change!

  81. tonyb39

Nanny,so true! I was watching Morning Joe this week and Joan Walsh was on,a favorite of mine, well she was saying how much she hates this bill, but that it must be passed as the President needs a win,WTF! Why, oh why isn’t a win a Public Option? It can now be done with 50 votes and Joe Biden.I said it earlier, the reason we won’t get a bill worth supporting is because of all the deals the President made with Pharma,Insurance Corps,Hospital Associations and the like.It pure Politics as you say and yes it STINKS!!

  82. nannymm

I saw that same segment with Joan Walsh. Unfortunately, she’s correct. This crappy bill has to pass. Read this:

Maybe our gutless wonder of a president may keep his word and “revisit” the public option in the future.

  83. Thanks for the kind words tony, to ad insult to injury I’ve got a lousy cold, just not my week.

  84. nannymm

Have some chicken soup, Brian, and get lots of rest.

    • dnd

Nanny’s right Brian. Lots and lots of hot chicken soup and put hot chili peppers in it. Great decongestant and loads of vitamin C. Zinc lozenges help too.

  85. dooty

tony I don’t think you have to worry that Brian will give up the pain meds any time too soon.

  86. Or the Vick’s Vapor Rub!

  87. nannymm

    Good point, Doots. LOL

  88. tonyb39

    Brian,damn a cold too.Shit that’s terrible.

Yep Nanny, the President’s healthcare bill does have to pass,in a perfect world I say why pass a bad bill, but political realities are what they are! I fear November’s going to be bad enough for Dems, without a bill it will be a slaughter. The thoughts of Republican’s taking over send a chill threw me,ending DADT comes to mind,it will never happen with Republican’s in control..

  89. tonyb39

    Dooty,
You so funny!! I think we can rest assured Brian won’t give up those pain meds,we can take it to the bank!

  90. ‘”You’re rubbing Vick’s Vapor Rub on your butt?”

You are seriously fucked up dude!’

    • dnd

“You are seriously fucked up dude!’”

Hey, at least I’m not the one rubbing Vick’s Vapor Rub on my butt!

  91. tonyb39

threw=through..I’m tired, did to many windows today..

  92. it’s “too” many windows tony!

    haha

  93. Want me to do it for you d?

    (that should shut him up!)

  94. nannymm

Well, if only I’d known how easy it was, Brian…..
