Under intense pressure from Democratic Party officials,
Harold E. Ford Jr., the former Tennessee congressman, has
decided not to challenge Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand in the
primary this fall, according to two people told of his plans.
He has told friends that, while he is convinced he could
prevail against Ms. Gillibrand, he feared the winner of the
primary would have little money and remain highly vulnerable
to a well-financed Republican challenger at a time when the
Democratic party controls the Senate by a slim majority.

the trip was good. Weather was mostly good. It was very cold on Thurs morn but warmed up nice. The wind laid down most of the weekend. Sunday was funny weather wise. My hosts always have a Sunday breakfast for friends after the Gathering. I cooked bacon outdoors on an open fire and it was cool but ok. Later in the afternoon the clouds came in and you can see off in the valley it looked liked it was dust out there but it turned out to be snow. Then the wind started to howl and Monday morn when I left at 6:30 am it was really howling. Down in town, it was calm. Then I spent all day in either rain or snow coming home.
I fear that you are both right. I just don’t understand why the people of Texas continue to support him….

I read the letter, I don’t know what’s getting you so upset.
I would think he’d have gotten the repug message last week. They have absolutely NO intention of voting for ANY healthcare bill or any other Democratic bill, for that matter. Reaching out to them is a waste of time. Let’s just get this done and get it done now. Efforts to incorporate repug ideas at this late date just slow things down and could derail them. Remember last August? I said it back then; if we didn’t get the bill through before the recess, it would be a disaster. Well, it didn’t get through and we ended up with a giant mess. Now we’re going to slow it down again???? WTF for?????
I forgot to mention that Obama can cave to repugs and incorporate their ideas even though they will do everything in their power to derail this bill and every other bill he supports. Yet, he can’t give real support to a Democratic idea: THE PUBLIC OPTION!!! Please! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Obama talks a great game but when it comes down to it, he had no backbone.
I suspect the 4 ideas incorporated are appealing to the remaining sane Republican and independent voters, plus blue dogs and those hailing from more conservative areas, and could be used to say “look, I listened at the summit and am being inclusive.”
They deal with cost containment and fraud reduction. I thought Coburn’s idea on investigating fraud and gaming the system was a good one.
From the letter:
1. …. Senator Coburn had an interesting suggestion that we engage medical professionals to conduct random undercover investigations of health care providers that receive reimbursements from Medicare, Medicaid, and other Federal programs.
2. My proposal also … authorizes funding to states for demonstrations of alternatives to resolving medical malpractice disputes, including health courts. … I am open to including an appropriation of $50 million in my proposal for additional grants.
3. At the meeting, Senator Grassley raised a concern, shared by many Democrats, that Medicaid reimbursements to doctors are inadequate in many states … if Medicaid is expanded to cover more people, we should consider increasing doctor reimbursement … in a fiscally responsible manner.
4. Senator Barrasso raised a suggestion that we expand Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). I know many Republicans believe that HSAs, when used in conjunction with high-deductible health plans, are a good vehicle to encourage more cost-consciousness in consumers’ use of health care services.
I think it’s Obama et al taking some of the wind out of GOP sails.

Nanny: I am disappointed he didn’t come out big for the public option at the outset, too — but would suspect we are headed that way within a few generations. It makes too much economic sense.
There’s been so much blowback on trying to get anything accomplished.
I think we ought to push for reform for economic security reasons. Clearly, altruism does not sell. Nor does looking out for one’s neighbors or the less fortunate, in the most “Christian” nation on earth.
I don’t think we can afford to wait a few generations, Dog’s Eye. IMO, if Obama was serious about cost containment, the public option would be at the top of his list of priorities. It would be far more beneficial than “medical professionals …. conduct[ing] random undercover investigations of health care providers that receive reimbursements from Medicare, Medicaid, and other Federal programs.”
As a medical professional, I can tell you that we are far to busy to do that. Furthermore, if anyone does do it, they will expect to be well paid. I suspect that there will be no money saved as a result, unless the “inspectors” have fraud quotas to meet. In that case, they will do what Medicaid inspectors used to do; they’ll cite Doctors for nonsense like x-rays that are too light or dark or physicians notes that aren’t “clear” enough. You know how that worked out? Most of the doctors I know quit the Medicaid program. Now that will really help the poor. NOT.
One final point. Good medical professionals are in the business of helping patients get well. They aren’t interested in working for insurance companies to deny care to patients. And they won’t be interested in working for the government to find fraud. That’s not what we went to school for.
I think it’s in the left’s political advantage if the president looks like he’s being the rational one and the repugs are not. That’s what I see this is letter being about, nothing more. There is nothing in the four points he’s sited that in any way compromises what’s in the existing bill. By the repugs voting against the bill once the president has included some of their points just further reinforces that they are they party of NO.
I hope it works out that way, Brian. I really do. But I’m not convinced. You give the American public far more credit than I do. I think stupidity abounds among the general population. I just don’t think the Obama haters will change or that the independents pay close enough attention to get it. If they did, they would already see that the repugs’ only idea is to obstruct everything.
I think Obama was surgically removing some fig leaves. He’s already put the Republicans on notice he will proceed without them.
Americans DO want their healthcare system reformed. There are numerous points of agreement. Go with them, and continue to improve the program as it hits the real world.
PS: there are plenty of Medicare bilkers and too many not-good medical professionals out there. But maybe not as many as Coburn and others think. Would be good to find out. Sunshine and all.

Representative Charles B. Rangel Says He Is Stepping Down Temporarily as House Ways and Means Committee Chairman
Caught in a swirl of ethics inquiries, Representative Charles
B. Rangel said on Wednesday that he would temporarily step
aside as leader of the House Ways and Means Committee.
Waking up to find Rangel stepping aside from Ways and Means chairmanship “temporarily” — excellent. That’s a headache no one needed. Ethically challenged is ethically challenged.
It sounds like he was going to try to brazen it out until he learned he was losing some Democratic support.
If Rangel knowingly violated the rules, he should be rebuked. If there is proof of corruption because of those corporate sponsored trips, he should resign his house seat. But if not, I wonder how what he did was unethical compared to Bunning’s recent actions.
my wife thinks Perry will be easier to defeat in the general than K would have been. I disagree. The Democrat is the last mayor of Houston and has had record percentages in his winning campaigns. I still think Perry is the next gov of Texas.

Bunning is literally demented. Would love to see the blowback on his actions hit John Cornyn and some of his other defenders on this action.
Dog, the point is, if Rangel didn’t violate ethics rules or commit illegal acts, he should remain in his position. It isn’t about who will replace him. It’s about fairness and right and wrong. If he’s guilty, he needs to resign; if he is not guilty, he should stay. So far we have a lot of allegations and one relatively minor infraction for which he was rebuked. I don’t think he should be pilloried until all the facts are out.

Cool your jets. The public option will be a reality. But the President can’t throw the Republican ideas out and here’s why:
One Republican idea will allow people to buy across state lines. This will allow people to buy into the Federal Employees Health Benefit plan. The available plans are specified by the government (currently the Office of Personnel and Management though likely to be moved to HHS) and periodically bid on by insurers. These are “administrative services only” plans where the risk pool is self insured and the winning bidders just do the paperwork for a small fee.
