Rally to Restore Sanity – Trip Report

Written by TempeBev’s daughter, Tif, who attended the Rally to Restore Sanity.

We flew out on Friday afternoon/evening in a plane totally packed to the gills.  Apparently, there was also a Marines marathon race goingon the same weekend, so there were some military on board.  At the end of the flight, the flight attendant asked us to applaud the military who were on board, and we did. Then suddenly, someone shouted, “And we’ve got Rally-ers on board too!” to which nearly half the plane erupted into hoots and hollers
We stayed out in a suburb in Maryland, thinking that if we were at the end of  the Metro line, we’d have a better chance getting a subway into DC.  I guess a lot of other people thought that too.  The station in New Carollton was packed, completely overflowing so we reasonably and courteously pushed our way to get tickets with the rest of the thousands who were there, and then onto the train  We followed the herds of people onto the National Mall and realized quite quickly that if we wanted to get a good spot, we should have arrived about three weeks earlier.  Donning our neongreen “SL, UT” shirts, we weaved our way through the humanity, andfinally settled into a thick pack of bodies just behind the first jumbo-tron screen.
The crowd grew thicker and thicker until you couldn’t fall down if you tried.  The rally started with thumping music from The Roots. I do have to say that the duel between Yusuf (Cat Steven)’s “Peace Train” and Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” was just sublime hilarity.
The poor souls who didn’t use the facilities before the show started(or who had small bladders) had to politely yet determinedly squeeze their way through the sardine-like bodies; they were never to return. I’m certain that some folks, once they realized that if you left, you weren’t getting back, just piddled in their pants.  LIke the guy in front of me said, “Hey, it’s sterile, and it’ll dry.”

I think that the attendance has been put at about 215,000 people, and it could have been more (certainly not less).  The signs were brilliant and made me wish that I could take a class to teach me how to be clever.  Here are a few of my favorites:

1. “My wife is a Muslim and NOT a terrorist, but I’m still scared of her.”

2. “God Hates Figs. Mark 11:12:14”

3. “It’s not fascism when we do it.”

4. “We disagree,  but I understand I still mustn’t stomp on your head.”

5. “Protest signs are an ineffectual way of communicating nuanced views on issues that cannot and should not be reduced to simple pithy slogans.”

6. “I’m mad as hell and I’m going to take a deep breath and count to ten.”

It was an excellent experience and great to be a part of.  I’m sure that no real change will come of it, because fear is too profitable and polarization means not having to take responsibility to actually do something.  But,  it was three hours of feeling really good and lucky to have the folks at the Daily Show and Colbert Report to make some sanity in the midst of all the noise.  We drank a toast to them later.

P.S. Our “SL, UT” shirts were quite the hit.  We got many curious stares and when we announced “Salt Lake, Utah” each time, people were thrilled that we came all that way, and also that we can laugh at ourselves in Utah too.  I’m sure we’re on someone’s Facebook page by now, given all the photos that were taken.

    excellent report thanks!

Fabulous report. So glad you made the trip and told us about it too.

Re “polarization means not having to take responsibility to actually do something. ” Never thought about it that way.

Tif, you must comment here more.

  3. Morning peeps,
    Love today’s post!

  4. Were there many people at the rally who apparently would identify themselves as “conservative” just not crazy and interested in turning the volume of our debates down a bit, well more than a bit?

      Bruce,
I don’t think Tif reads this blog, so there may not be an answer to you question.
Her mom, Bev is a regular here and submitted her daughter’s trip report.

ps. your blog is great. There are a lot of disaffected conservatives out there.

  5. dog's eye view

    I hope so, Bruce.

That you, Bruce Bartlett? Don’t think so given photo, but ….

Anyhoo, Bruce, the conservatives of which you speak absolutely exist in real life — suspect you are one of them — and it would be delightful to hear more reasoned debate and less craziness all around.

  6. Bruce Bartlett? Me? I’m flattered, but I’ve only seen the Whitehouse once from the outside.

I consider myself a disaffected conservative.

Disaffected especially by “movement” conservative who seem to have no qualms about use of the military in anything but a “limited government” way – Iraq especially. Furthermore, in the last administration ideology seemed to trump even a need to carefully look at facts.

You may disagree, but at least at this point I don’t think George Bush knowingly lied us into Iraq, but I think he made that decision in a remarkably wreckless way.

That said, I voted for Obama because McCain seemed (seems) to think that war was a good idea still. All the 2008 Republican POTUS candidates were falling over each other to sound more jingoistic than the other. And Romney – proclaiming he’d like to open another Guantanomo. That was … words fail.

Once I was in, I’ve wanted President Obama to do good things for the country, I think he has, and I still support him.

I’m still a believer that we have to limit government both in what it does with the military and in trying to perfect society broadly view government mandates and programs. I supported the health care bill, with the belief that it doesn’t do near enought to contain costs, but could be improved. I think Obama could address our budget gap, and it might be a great achievement. He has done so yet though.

If a Republican in 2012 was willing to really address the budget deficit, with spending cuts and full repeal of the Bush tax cuts, and recognized that premptive war has been tried with disasterous results, and likely should never be attempted again, I MIGHT support him over Obama.

I don’t expect to see that though, and I expect to vote for Obam.

  7. One final thing….

    That’s a really cute puppy!

Speaker Nancy Pelosi Will Seek to Remain Head of the House Democratic Caucus, Aides Say

Despite steep losses for her party in Tuesday’s elections,
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said on Friday that
she would run to remain the leader of the House Democrats,
even as some of her colleagues urged her to step down.

In a letter to her caucus, Ms. Pelosi, who engineered the
Democratic takeover of the House in 2006 but became a
favorite target of Republicans, said that many of the
remaining House Democrats had encouraged her to try to stay
on as the leader after the new Republican majority replaces
her as Speaker — an unusual move in light of the rebuke her
    party received at the polls.

“Based on those discussions, and driven by the urgency of
protecting health care reform, Wall Street reform, and Social
Security and Medicare, I have decided to run,” Ms. Pelosi
    wrote in her letter.

      Doots,
I think the takeaway, is that no matter what, KO always finds a way to sooner or later get his butt fired. It was only a matter of time.

  10. I doubt he’ll be fired, he’s their rating star with a loyal following. I’m betting on a week’s suspension and very public mia culpa on KO’s part.

“Scarborough, Buchanan Also Made Political Contributions”

Well it wouldn’t bother me if they got canned too 😉
I’m assuming they followed protocol and asked permission.
I’m also assuming that possibly MSNBC was looking for a reason, any reason, to drop Obermann.

  11. For those of you who have been wondering what Craig Crawford is up to:

    Keith, How We Knew Ye
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/craig-crawford/keith-how-we-knew-ye_b_779618.html

the man obviously has far too much time on his hands!

Small earthquake today, local even. Quite a jolt but very short. (3.7)

Saw Newsweek cover with El Rushbo Limbaugh, says “Power 50.”

    God help us.

Then home to find out Olbermann had been suspended for making political fines that his big bosses presumably could have made ten times over.

The earthquake did not scare me.

Having corporations and big media pull their punches …

They will overreach. They always do.

But felt a little chill on hearing that, even though I think Olbermann’s a blowhard. (Intelligent one, though.)

  13. dog's eye view

Political contributions, not fines. But you knew that.

Here’s image of the Limbaugh Newsweek cover. I could have sworn he had a cigar in his mouth. He does not.

    http://breakingnewsdir.com/rush-limbaugh-on-newsweek-cover-97503.html

Check out the (similar to) English blurb. I guess it’s a text translator?

  14. d you gotta love the back handed nature of his post! Apparently he also used it as a post on his “blog”. At this rate the only place he’s likely to get any air time is on the Cartoon Network!

  15. TempeBev

Gee, the word was CNN was going down hill because of it’s personnel. MSNBC is definitely in 2nd place.

I agree, Keith got the “Crawford Bump.”

Good for Chris Hayes saying he won’t cover for him – we’ll see or he may be next.

Watch out Rachel – you may be next.

  16. dog's eye view

I don’t think it’s right that journalists and news personality are not allowed to make political contributions.

However, I think that they — and every one of their bosses — should have to disclose any contributions over $199.99 IMMEDIATELY via an online site that is updated in real time.

No hiding behind benign sounding entities or waiting for the FEC to slap one’s wrist 38 months after the election.

And it’s ridiculous to pretend pundits are not biased, whether they scrupulously abstain from voting (which is a civic duty, is it not?) or making political contributions. We have seen an example or two of that in our real lives.

Allow them to contribute, but make them disclose those contributions and own them, publicly.

I hope Keith O takes a nice long vacation away from cellphones and MSNBC.

    ======

Something MSNBC’s bright powers that be might consider:

They are pushing a product (sensationalized cable news that’s really opinion, by and large) that one is much happier for missing.

If they lose some viewers during Keith’s suspension, the smarter ones might not come back.

Bev: you raised a wicked smart rally observer and writer.

    But you knew that.

  18. TempeBev

Dog – yup I knew that -thanks very much!

Zenyatta so nearly pulled it off this evening.

Did any of you catch the Breeder’s Cup?

Another 2-4 strides and she would have surpassed Blame; she was still accelerating as they ran out of field.

Not sure what happened; she had a bad start and was lagging dead last for a long time, then made her move and threaded her way up through the chase.

    Maybe just a tad late.

    It was great racing.

    She survived.

Unlike an earlier racehorse today, Rough Sailing. RIP.

Love Zenyatta but how much can you enjoy a sport where too many athletes die in their prime?

Not up for gladiator sports. Politics is brutal enough.

But look forward to seeing Zenyatta in person again. She lives somewhere in California.

And yes, she is named after Zenyatta Mondata. Her owner, Jerry Moss, is the M in A&M Records. (Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss.)

Please get another thread – I’m tired of seeing my daughter and friends.
