Watergate 40 Years Later

Today is the 40th anniversary of the Watergate break-in, changing the political landscape in profound ways.  Additionally, every scandal is now prefixed with “gate.”

    Nooooooo! Bring back the dog!

    Happy Father’s Day out there.

  3. Rodney King dead, such a sad life.

  4. Bev does that make us the Back Channel 4?

  5. I believe that the Watergate scandal left an indelible mark on my generation — the one that was passing through junior high and high school at the time, and had its youthful idealism and naïveté about government exploded earlier than I think the previous generation’s had. As a middle school history teacher, I’ve endeavored to explain to my students just how disillusioning that entire period was. I put together a video summarizing the events. You can watch it at https://vimeo.com/43366697.

      Ron,
Your students are lucky to have you as a teacher. Not only to tell them about the Watergate era, but exposing them to Quincy Jones 😉

If there is any good takeaway from Watergate, it’s that it was a bipartisan investigation, culminating with Barry Goldwater telling Nixon he had to go.

I would take Richard Nixon over the “conservatives” (actually reactionary radicals) in today’s GOP any day of the week.

      Sra Dog,
Nixon opened the door to China and started the Environmental Protection Agency. He really screwed up with the wage freeze thanks to his Fed Chief Arthur Burns. Nixon would be regarded as a “moderate” by today’s Republican party.

But what he did was criminal, and he paid the price.

dnd: agreed re paying the price. A lot of pathologies in our institutional fail can be traced back to people not having to pay the price anymore. Torture and lying the country into a fake war. Child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. Predatory banking practices that enrich the banks while hollowing out the economy. Letting people and institutions game the system, and then saying “too big to fail” or “it’s ALWAYS been this way” when it hasn’t …

anyhoo: thinking of you, dnd, because you’re going cold turkey on Ed Quillen this Sunday, sadly.

Lee: Happy Father’s Day, dude. Hope they’re treating you right.

Ron: welcome. Look forward to watching your video.
