Now comes the real fight for healthcare and the fight to retain Senate seats. Is it an oxymoron or does it already fit the description?
Geez I don’t know how you can’t call what happened last night a “real fight”, we only won by two votes. Lets hope Reid is taking notes as to how Nancy did it.
It’s an entirely different ball game in the Senate thanks to the damned filibuster. That’s where the real fight is going to be; Nancy’s methods won’t work there. Reid needs to figure this one out for himself. And he damned well better!

If you read women’s reactions to the Stupak amendment, you will see just how angry many of them are at Congress and the president. That will not bode well for either in 2010 and 2012. Once again, the president and the dems caved on women’s rights. Not good!
The entire abortion issue should have never been part of the health care debate, from either side. I’m not thrilled with Stupak but if that’s the price of getting health care reform I can live with it, and trying to lay blame on the speaker is absurd.
That is your opinion; women disagree. They have a right to reproductive health services. The Stupak amendment infringes upon those rights. Furthermore, you may think it’s absurd to lay the blame on Nancy, but many women are doing exactly that. That, my dear, is one REALITY of the day.
The truth of the matter is Nanny a lot of members of congress weren’t willing to vote for the bill till the Catholic Bishops signed off on it, and without Stupak the Bishops refused to.

Lieberman to investigate Fort Hood killings
Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Connecticut independent who chairs the the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, plans to begin an investigation into the killing of a dozen soldiers and a civilian at Fort Hood, Texas, to see if the Army “missed warning signs.”
“This was an attack on American troops,” Lieberman said on ” Fox News Sunday.”

I’m struggling with that issue myself, Bev. It’s very disheartening.
While Brian is correct that without Stupak’s amendment the bill would not have passed, it is also correct to say that women’s groups are very angry. Women play a major role in Democratic politics and they will not forget this vote. They see it as a betrayal and there will be repercussions. Count on it.
Nothing Lieberman does inspires confidence in me, Bev. I’m not for ideological purity tests or for purging dissidents within the Democratic caucus. But in Lieberman’s case, I would happily make an exception. I think he ought to be run out of the caucus and stripped of his chairmanship ASAP.
Nanny I agree completely that women should be pissed off. But I think we have to be careful about not throwing out the baby with the bath water and falling into the trap the repugs have currently fallen into. The only way this bill will get better in time is to make sure we have a Democratic majority in both chambers for a long time to come. Making moderate Dems the target of ire is a sure way to make sure we lose the House in 2010. We see what the quest for ideological purity is doing to the GOP, lets not make the same mistake.

Maybe it’s time for women to band together and form a “Women’s Reproductive Health Co-op.” It could be an insurance plan for reproductive health services only. For a small premium, perhaps based on a sliding scale, women could receive coverage that is otherwise denied to them under the Stupak amendment. Perhaps some of the contributions we women make to Democrats could be diverted to set up and fund such a co-op.
That sounds like a great idea Nanny!

The Stupak-Ellsworth-Pitts-Smith-Kaptur-Dahlkemper Amendment is a red herring in the context of the House bill. Before anyone ran the numbers about coverage, everyone jumped on it.
I happen to like and respect Taylor Marsh. She supported Obama and is hardly a man hater.

Taylor Marsh: True to Her Word

I have trashed Taylor Marsh quite a bit for allowing her site to become a festering swamp of anti-Obama hate. That being said, she posted months ago that she would fight McCain whoever the nominee was. She has been true to her word. For example,
Hillary has asked her delegates and her financial backers to support Barack Obama and do everything they can to elect him. She wants her supporters to do the same. If anyone thinks Hillary wants McCain elected they don’t know Senator Clinton. There is no way she’d embrace any Democrat who supported her endorsing John bomb-bomb-bomb Iran McCain.
SOME of her commenters are still nuts, but Taylor, at least, recognizes the situation and is part of the reality-based community.

Fort Hood, Texas, hosts tens of thousands of men who are trained to fight for their country. But none of them stopped Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan as he blew away 13 of their colleagues Thursday afternoon. It was a civilian police officer, Sgt. Kimberly Munley, who confronted and shot him in an exchange of gunfire. For her trouble, Munley took bullets in both legs and an arm. Maybe the president will pin a medal on her.
Here’s a better way to honor Munley: End the ban on women in combat.
