In the current squabble over the Bush tax cuts which are scheduled to sunset this year, pundits and pols are calling to make them permanent. The Bush tax cuts, passed with reconciliation and Dick Cheney breaking the tie, were “temporary” because there wasn’t a corresponding spending cut to pay for them. The idea was that they would stimulate the economy. Well, that didn’t work and now we owe China to pay for those tax cuts.
But the idea to make them “permanent” is poli-speak. Tax rates are always changing. Clinton raised them. Bush 41 raised them. Reagan raised them (five times!) after he lowered them.
So the idea of “permanent” tax cuts is just political B.S. designed to pander to voters.

But if he allows Bush’s “temporary” tax cuts for the wealthy to continue, I think he will demoralize his supporters beyond repair. Those tax cuts are indefensible and let’s not even pretend they work, or conveniently forget whom they benefit.
This is a hill to die on. I think Obama realizes that.

I”m guessing the bill that ends up on Obama’s desk will allow the tax cuts to continue and unemployment benefits to continue. If he signs it to continue unemployment benefits, some will be upset about the tax cuts for the rich and others will complain that he’s increasing the debt. If he doesn’t sign it some will complain that he caved on the continuation of unemployments while others will say he’s stifling job growth by not cutting taxes for the rich . So no matter what he does, it’ll piss a lot of people off. He can’t win.

I hope you’re right Brian. The reality is that the middle class tax cuts won’t really help the economy, compared to the tax cuts for the wealthy. If Obama lets the tax cuts expire, he is effectively giving the finger to the Republicans and saying: “Bring it on. I will veto any tax program you propose that is not what I want.” This would really help him with his base.

They must’ve read my post of many moons ago. Small businesses, as defined by the Small Business Administration, are the major job creators. Small businesses, as defined by the IRS, don’t have to be small by SBA definitions. It’s basically a federal tax dodge for the shareholders.
Note that if you hire someone, you can deduct their wage and benefits from your net revenue when listing your profits for tax purposes. So there is no way that tax breaks for the rich will provide incentives for hiring. All part of the right wing meme that none in the lame-stream media are smart enough to challenge.

years ago when I was young and irresponsibility, I had just finished smoking a joint while parked in my pickup with my then girlfriend. We were in a parking lot that belonged to a Synagogue (the only one in town). A cop drove up to us and wanted to know what we were doing in that atheist church’s parking lot. That pretty much explains how it was growing up in Texas in the 50’s 60’s and 70’s. There are still a lot of old timer influence left but it is changing at a snails pace.

Better late than never. Democratic Senators have started to go on the offensive, particularly Harry Reid. I don’t know if this edict came down from Obama or Reid or they are just mad as hell and aren’t gonna take the Mitch McConnell bullshit any more, but either way, it’s a smart political move.
I think the Republican leadership is scared shitless. It’s easy to be the barking dog chasing the car, but what happens when you catch the car? What are you gonna do to justify all your yapping?

When I was about 19 I went to dinner with my paternal grandparents and ordered a manhattan to which my grandfather murdered “that’s a girls drink”. haha.
I think grandpa may have been confused thinking that a Manhattan was a “girls drink.” Sinatra drank Manhattans. Maybe he was thinking of Cosmos.
My father the colonel would beg to differ!
I loved visiting a freshman year college friend’s grandparents. They wanted to serve us rye whiskey. Lovely folks.

My father’s parents were not the nicest people in the world, case in point. Many years ago I called my dad to wish him a happy new years, in the course of the conversation he said to me (and no I’m not making this up) “BTW your grandmother died 4 days ago.” Naturally I replied with “Why didn’t you let me know?” to which he replied “What difference did it make” Tough family!

Carol made turkey gumbo the other day. Had some from lunch yesterday. very good. Had several onions and sausage links cut up and a carrot or two plus the carcass of said turkey. Carol put the carcass in the freezer T’giving day to prevent having to make the gumbo right away.
There have been several mixed drinks that have made me hurl. Slo Gin Fizz was probably the first one that did it.

Don’t remember ever ordering a second Slo Gin Fizz. Seems like one of those drinks if you’re ordering it, you are not of legal age to drink.
